Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

My ticket says car 640 on the CZ roomette xx on October 14th. What does this mean?

    Baggage checking

Now I make it with a rolly, a small duffel which by means of an ingenious device rides on the rolly, and a back pack. I can get all of that stowed in a roomette and still have room for me, so I don't check stuff anymore.

    Texas Eagle Question

Alas, living in Austin, the Eagle is the only way to easily access the rest of the system. But, getting on in Austin going north, I can have real food with me for at least part of the day and a half trip. Might even be able to get a pizza delivered in Dallas at trackside (a friend lives right...

    Baggage checking

Back in 2017 my friend Frank and I took a rather comprehensive 28-day trip. Texas Eagle Austin to Chicago, hotel overnight, California Zephyr Chicago to Sacramento, hotel overnight, California State Railroad Museum, then Amtrak California to Oakland, several days there at Jack London Square...

    Empire Builder Trip Report

The Portland cars are put on the rear. The Seattle sleeper is up front, with the dining car. Same thing in San Antonio (got it this time!) with the 422 cars coming down from Chicago. Sleeper right up front by the engine (used to be, anyway), tail end Charlie from SA to LA. One time (alas a while...

Pacific Surfliner BC will not have complimentary access to Metropolitan Lounge as of 7/15/22

Several years ago the lounge attendant showed me plans for a significantly enlarged lounge, all still on that upper level. Wonder what happened to that?

Sunset Limited trains canceled 8/10 and 8/12

My mistake. I live near Austin, and had to go into the maelstrom there yesterday, so my brain said San Antonio, my fingers typed Austin. Gotta learn to scan what I write before I hit Post.

Sunset Limited trains canceled 8/10 and 8/12

If I'm reading the transitdocs app correctly, the eastbound Sunset Limited 2/422 got to Austin this morning at 9:42, 3 hours and 17 minutes late. The Texas Eagle 22 left at 7:00 am. on time. Guess there's a bus ride happening.

    Train tips for fat guys

I'm 6' 6", 325 pounds (147 kg sounds so much better!). If the restrooms in your car are the budget airline type, viz. toilet in straight line, very close walls, check out the coach closest to you. It will likely have a handicapped restroom which will have way more room. The restrooms in coach...

Amtrak should make fare evaders pay

Back in the 1990's when the Sunset Limited went all the way across to Florida, I was in a roomette, and we stopped in the middle of the night somewhere in Florida for the police to come aboard and remove a passenger who had found an empty roomette and moved up from coach without buying the...

Sunset Limited trains canceled 8/10 and 8/12

I was getting so nervous about the #422 woes, with regard to my planned October trip, between horribly late trains, missed connection at San Antonio (as happened again today), and was not wanting to find out on the 13th or even train day that the TE422 was cancelled. I now have put off the 61...

Sunset Limited trains canceled 8/10 and 8/12

I'm booked on the Texas Eagle #422 on October 14th from LA to Chicago. I live in the middle, near Austin, Texas, so I've ridden both directions, but just once I wanted to do the whole 61+ hour thing in one fell swoop. I'm booked from Austin to Chicago to Seattle to LA to get to the beginning of...

    Amtrak delays

That is terroristic behavior, making the crew think there were people involved. Sick people to do this.

    Things to take with you

Things to take on the trip: I have a very nice 15 foot braided extension cord with two outlets and two USB plugins. It's been enough, and also works in hotel rooms where for some reason all the outlets near the desk are filled up with their stuff. Don't forget chargers and spare cords (they...

    City of New Orleans Tips?

I was in the family bedroom on the CONO a few years ago, and there is a lot of wheel noise, and being right behind the engine, I can testify that there are in excess of 50,000 grade crossings on the route.

Discussing a trip around the Western Rail Loop of the US.

I, as a rule, almost always schedule an overnight between trains. Even a 7-hour layover can evaporate. I took a chance last year and went to NYC from Texas and did a same day in Chicago to the Lake Shore Limited, but my train was two hours late getting in, one hour of it sitting south of Joliot...

Who in the world are you?

I'm 73, single, sadly more sedentary than I should be. Retired Navy (20 years 1 month 13 days), working in electronics as an enlisted man; passing on to Ammunition as a Chief Warrant Officer (The ship and I both survived the experience). Retired totally now, living near Austin, Texas, and...

    Widfara finds this site

Widfara is the Anglo-Saxon word for Traveler. One of my earlier vehicles had the name Rudigar Widfara (Red Spear - Wide Ranging). For about six years now I shift back and forth from train trips to road trips (My Ford F150, Greymalkin, certified by the state of California as immoral or evil, in...
