Southwest Chief 3(5) detouring through Quincy, IL?

Anybody know what's going on? That's gotta be some super rare mileage right there. Track it on asm.transitdocs.com/map.

15,000 miles or so criss-crossing the country.

Awww, ya shoulda done the CA Zephyr. I will recommend the Cardinal though, especially because it is winter. The trees will be less grown or bare, allowing for easier viewing of the New River Gorge in West Virginia (Montgomery, WV to Hinton, WV).

Fresh Air (Smoking) Stops on the Coast Starlight

San Luis Obispo is a 13 minute stop in both directions... it's just not shown on the CS timetable, but is on the Pacific Surfliner timetable at the back.

    General questions boarding late trains

I think so, except for some trains like the Capitol Limited, which crosses into Eastern Time on the first evening, yet the diner car operates on Central Time the whole evening. Perhaps the same with Cardinal #50 as well.

    Amtrak's Shortest Train

Has anyone mentioned the Hilltopper yet? It's like the Cardinal of the Cardinal.

Best way to get a seat in SSL for northbound starlight

You can see the sea from a little after the stop in Oxnard, CA. Good chance you'll be eating lunch along this stretch. It disappears for a bit through the Santa Barbara area, then you're back on the coastline, maybe intermittently, for a good 60-70 minutes at least. It goes inland for quite a...

    Advance Notification of Delays

VIA alerts passengers of it for its Canadian, but that train is delayed hours and hours every run. Amtrak is not. But if they emphasize that delays *sometimes* happen, on the website, a notification of it when booking LD trains would be nice.

Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

I'm hoping the crew of 11(3) next month will let me take pictures of the inside of the PPC at the end of its run at LAX. It's the second to last run, so they might be nice. What do you all think?

Married couple killed as Amtrak train hits SUV in N.C. 1/14/18

This thread has seems to have derailed, much like the derailment being discussed.

Kansas City to San Diego thru Fullerton rather than thru Los Angeles?

Strange, because there's only 11 minutes between 50 and 19 at WAS, while there's almost an hour at ALX. I've also never heard of a multi-city ticket giving you a guaranteed connection. Luckily, the PacSurf coach class is unreserved, so you can take any train you want if you have a ticket for a...

    Meals on long distance routes.

Usually prepared beforehand, except steaks and omelettes (maybe a couple other things too), which are cooked to order. Everything on the Cardinal, Lake Shore Limited, and City of New Orleans is microwaved (or convection ovened), but it's still pretty good if done right.

    Sleeper car with an infant?

Yes! Nuance! More of it is needed today...

    LSL 48 (28)

I've never laughed this much while browsing the forums.

Amtrak Train 78 (Fridays only NPN-RVR)

Is there a reason that Amtrak doesn't make Train 78 available for booking? Perhaps no cafe if it's unprofitable to operate?

Coast Starlight northbound - views from the train?

If the train is late, wake up early to enjoy views of the Sacramento River between Redding & Dunsmuir, and a little north of it. You have to be really late though. Mt. Shasta should be visible in the early mornings if you're a little late. North of Klamath Falls is Klamath Lake, with the above...

New station for Tacoma, WA proposed

Train 422, train change at San Antonio?

I believe this is the reason that the Amtrak schedules for the SWC and CZ at Galesburg still have a note saying "S. Seminary St.", denoting the BN station. The other was N. Broad St. for the Santa Fe.

Help with Travel From Washington DC to San Francisco with stop overs

I second snv's idea of the Grand Canyon. At that time a shuttle bus from Flagstaff will take you to Williams, where you can catch the 9:30A departure on the Grand Canyon RR to South Rim, arriving 11:45. There you can just spend a few hours, or stay a night there. Return leaves 3:30pm, arrives...

Wendover, UT - W. Wendover, NV

But I'd hate having to wake up and drive in a pitch dark morning every day.

American Airlines glitch may cancel many flights over Christmas
