What is the Amtrak Exhibit Train?

This would be a good time to run an exhibit train on the proposed 3C+D route to help educate Ohioans who have not ridden a train. That might help build some popular support for our politicians to begin to more seriously consider finding the money to fund the proposal.

    Roomette discussion

That is not what I meant. The Lounge Car was the next car beyond the diner and the sleepers. It was like sleeper-diner-lounge type of consist.

    Roomette discussion

I don't recall ever having to line up in a sleeper waiting to enter the dining car. If the crew is not ready to seat me when I arrive, I have been asked to wait in the adjoining Lounge Car and I would be paged.

    Midwest Rail Plan Final Report

True, but the members of our General Assembly seem to have difficulty hearing the voice of the people.

Lower priced Sleeper for single travelers

I remember those and saw brochures that described the trains. The City of Los Angeles and the Super Chief were definitely advertised as a First Class product. The El Capitan and the Challenger, if I recall correctly, was advertised as a "classier" coach product. Before the arrival of the...

    Baggage checking

That could be done, but, it will take time for that to happen and would impact the train's schedule. If the train's original schedule would be adjusted to accommodate that service, I don't see an issue.

    Midwest Rail Plan Final Report

Amtrak's proposal for Ohio is a job creating investment. One of a few reasons why the incumbent Governor is showing interest in their proposal. Besides, a campaign season looms for the gentleman.

    Midwest Rail Plan Final Report

Guess which interest group has the most effective lobbyists in Columbus.

    Baggage checking

Yes, within reason. At small "stations", i.e. Cumberland, MD, there aren't the facilities to or personnel to provide that service. There would be no debate about what a "major" station was, but, a "strategic station"? I suspect that would cause a debate. Amtrak's management would be more...

Sunset Limited - any interesting scenery, specific side to look out?

You are correct about what to expect to see in El Paso. The train runs close enough to the border that you can easily see into Mexico. As the train travels through the desert areas, I found it interesting to see the number and the frequency of the white Border Patrol trucks. I thought the...

China Eastern 737 crash (March 2022)

It seems to me that this is another example of a pilot suicide. But, how could it have happened? Has China Eastern not adopted the practice that when the cockpit door opens and a pilot leaves to go to the loo (or whatever), a Flight Attendant then takes the person's place? How could the...

    Tipping on Amtrak

Offer the gratuity as you leave the train at your destination. The amount should be based on the service you receive. Generally, for a one' night journey, a $10/person gratuity is what I offer. If the SCA has been particularly helpful, I will increase that amount.

    Midwest Rail Plan Final Report

Note that this statement is by someone from NORTHEAST Ohio. Amtrak's plan does not include that part of the State (other than Cleveland). This is a "sour grapes" type of statement. "Where's our piece of this new pile of money?"

    Midwest Rail Plan Final Report

If the business community in Central Ohio continues to support Amtrak's plan, the politicians in our Statehouse will take serious note of that support, I believe.

    Airports losing service

Many will disagree, but, when airlines were regulated, flying was much more enjoyable with better service provided by the airlines. Those of us who live in small markets were considerably better served. Given my tax dollars support air transportation, where's the equity? A traveler whose home...

Lower priced Sleeper for single travelers

Interesting? Yes! Thanks for the link. I am wondering now if what I saw were Duplex Roomettes and not Slumbercoaches.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Maybe that's what they were doing in the galleys of the dining cars of the 1940's. Oh? "Would you like Fries with that?" Based on my observations, the usual answer is "Yes".

    Rude Amtrak employees

I rode on PRR, NYC, and C&NW trains pre-Amtrak and I have nothing but pleasant memories of the personnel whom I met. Most Amtrak staff whom I have encountered have ranged along a Bell Curve. None have been so unpleasant that I specifically remember them. I recall several who were friendly...

Lower priced Sleeper for single travelers

Thank you. That answers my questions. That was when the food and beverage options available in the Food Service and Lounge cars were more plentiful and varied than currently.

Ohio finally starts the process for new Amtrak service

I was able to read the story and it's news to me, but, very encouraging news. There are some possible reasons for the Governor's interest in this. There's Federal money to be obtained and not left on the table by not using it. The previous GOP Governor took the money when it was available for...
