Reminiscing about SFZ/CZ, Pioneer and Desert Wind

I don't recall that, but, it could have been there and I never noticed it. Thanks zephyr17 and jis! My memory still seems to be working!

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Two memorable and pleasant dining car experiences when sharing a table with others was on the Silver Meteor and the Empire Builder. On the Meteor, i was seated with a Father and his 3 sons. En route to Orlando for a Disney World vacation and this was the boys' first train ride, the boys were...

Reminiscing about SFZ/CZ, Pioneer and Desert Wind

I vividly remember the train stopping in downtown Las Vegas with all of its glitz and lights. We were having dinner at that time. I still recall a diner/lounge type car. Would this type of Diner been a Diner/Lounge as I am remembering?

Reminiscing about SFZ/CZ, Pioneer and Desert Wind

I don't remember that. I recall the Desert Wind diner was dropped when the train connected with the California Zephyr. We had dinner out of Los Angeles; the next morning, when we went for breakfast, we were in a different diner. I am remembering that the Desert Wind diner was a Diner/Lounge...

Stephen Gardner's stewardship of Amtrak (4/22)

It's more of a response than I usually receive from the majority of my State and Federal "Representatives/Senators".

Cardinal (and other trains) Cafe Lounge - or Employee Lounge?

Good question and I hope we learn the answer to that question.

    Auto Train new schedule

I wonder how this will impact the time when one can board the train? I like the later arrival time at the destination. As long as the dining car's closing hour for breakfast is adjusted to reflect this later arrival, there won't be the need to arise so early just to get breakfast. (Such as...

Tips for sleeping well on Amtrak

That's what I have read, but, some wine before bed seems to help relax me sufficiently that, on most nights, I quickly go to sleep. I'll sleep 4-5 hours and then awake. Sometimes, then, after a visit to the loo, I'll have trouble going back to sleep. I have wondered if it is due to the...

Tips for sleeping well on Amtrak

That first night on the train can be a light sleeping night for me as well. Something different? Anticipation of my trip? Could be due to a variety of reasons. For me, enjoying a nice bottle of wine from the Dining Car or Lounge before I retire for the evening almost always helps to provide...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Your idea makes sense to me. Looking at the Crescent's schedule, having an exchange of dining car crew at Charlotte. A Charlotte-NYP team; a Charlotte-New Orleans team. There would still need to be a dorm car available for the teams because of the long down times between meal services.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Many years ago when C & 0 ran a train from Cincinnati to Washington, my traveling companion and I experienced the same thing. Not long after leaving Cincinnati, we went to the Diner for dinner. First course was soup. The Waiter put the cup of soup with a saucer underneath on the table and...

Hierarchy between commercial airline crews and ships' crews

I never knew that! Wow! That is rather like today on ships that have Azipods. If needed, a crew member can get into the interior of the pod to service or repair it.

    Travel with walker/unmanned station question

Checking the Amtrak information for Cincinnati, it says that checked baggage service is available. If so, then, the station would be considered manned. Wouldn't it?

Is restoration of the National Limited feasible?

It is much more important to get the Ohio 3C+D route established and in operation before any attempt is made to return the National Limited.

    Amtrak #2, departed 4/15/22

One of the lessons that I have learned when traveling is to take with me a couple of phone numbers of taxi companies or car services just in case no taxis are available when I arrive. Even needed to have a number when the Silver Meteor arrived at Fort Lauderdale rather late.

Stephen Gardner's stewardship of Amtrak (4/22)

I think I understand your disappointment about the Secretary. But, what is going on in the Executive Offices of the Transportation Department? We're not privy to that and there may be more of an effort to assist Amtrak than we realize.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

There has been discussion on a cruise oriented message board about how cruising/traveling seems to make it, somehow, more easy to open and have a conversation with other travelers. That has been my experience for certain. And, it applies only to traveling by train or during a cruise. I have...

    Amtrak #2, departed 4/15/22

Arriving so early in New Orleans, you could be the first guest of the morning for Breakfast at Brennan's. 😀

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

No IPad at the table? That sounds like a "dining car staff made rule". If it is not, then it is a stupid Amtrak rule.

Cincinnati waiting room closed on Mondays?

It's been awhile since I have used the Cincinnati station, but, I thought it was manned again. I remember boarding and leaving the Cardinal and the only way to do so--that I could see--was from the interior of the station. Hopefully, there will be others with more recent information that mine.
