Empire Builder disruption due to freight derailment (5/1/22)

So, based on what I see on Amtrak Track Your Train Map the EB 7 that left Chicago yesterday is well past where the fire location is/was. It recently crossed into Montana from North Dakota. So I guess the track is passable again. The EB 8 is approaching Shelby, which is where the previous...

Empire Builder disruption due to freight derailment (5/1/22)

So it looks like they have “cancelled“ both directions of the already-underway Empire Builders (at Shelby and Minot). So what does Amtrak do with all the passengers on those trains now in Shelby and Minot? Do they bus them somewhere? If so, where? I would assume they would bus them to the...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Sorry to steer the current direction of this thread, but it does seem to be a catch all thread about Amtrak dining. I'll be taking my first Amtrak long distance trip in June on the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, and Empire Builder. I have a roomette for all legs so my meals are included...

    Tracking current location on iPad

To close the loop a little on this, I downloaded maps.me and also downloaded the entire USA map set to my iPad. My iPad is definitely NOT cellular capable. I made sure that the iPad WiFi was enabled and started the maps.me app. Then I got in my car and started driving around my small, rural...

    Map of California Zephyr route?

What device are you using to try and download to? The download instructions vary depending on whether you are on a computer (might even differ by browser some), a phone (might vary between Android and iOS), or a tablet (might vary between Android and iPad OS).

    Tracking current location on iPad

I just checked my Garmin and it has a mode where “Navigation - Calculations“ are “Off Road”, which indicates it uses a straight line for distances. I like your waypoint approach, but don’t think I will get to that detail. I’m mostly wanting to just see my location on a moving map. I don’t...

Critique my hotel thoughts for Emeryville and Seattle

Thanks everyone. I booked all the hotels for my trip today and am really excited to get going! The prices of all hotels these days is somewhat high, but such is life.

    Tracking current location on iPad

Thanks for the replies above. I'll check out how tedious it is to download Google maps along the route. I also just remembered that I have a portable Garmin GPS with a nice 6.5" screen that I bring along when I have a rental car on my trips. Maybe I'll just bring that along. I'm pretty sure...

    Tracking current location on iPad

I tried a few forum searches for this, but must not be using good search words. My apologies if this has been asked before. I've watched a lot of videos over the last couple days as I research for my June cross country Amtrak trips. One thing I've seen a few times is people set up some means...

Critique my hotel thoughts for Emeryville and Seattle

This is great info. Thanks for sharing. I’m sure I will use this. I’m fine using BART to, especially if I go over to SF.

Critique my hotel thoughts for Emeryville and Seattle

Oh yes! Eating is something I will be looking to do. I actually don’t know the Oakland side of the bay as well as The City side. I may very well just stick to the local area. I’ve used Uber and will likely do that to get away from the hotel areas.

    Greetings from Northwest Pennsylvania

That makes sense. To be honest, I don’t see myself focusing too much on the Eastern routes. I can do that easily by car (and already have for much of it). But, certainly, the Southwest Chief, Texas Eagle, CONO, and the remaining portion of the Coast Starlight are attractive to me.

Critique my hotel thoughts for Emeryville and Seattle

I wondered about that. I assume I will be getting on a Coast Starlight that is coming in from a day of travel from the south.

Critique my hotel thoughts for Emeryville and Seattle

First time poster, so be gentle. I searched the forum and read quite a bit on various hotel options for my destinations and I think I have devised a plan that might work for me (it's not that much of a challenge, really). Does this plan make sense? Background: This will be my first Amtrak...

    Greetings from Northwest Pennsylvania

Hello there! I'm a 59 (very soon to be 60) year old single man who lives in a rural community in Northwestern Pennsylvania. I retired 3 1/2 years ago from being a software sales engineer. I've traveled the USA a lot (business travel and quite a bit on pleasure trips as well). However, up...
