Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

Although perhaps not ideal, but you can’t tell me Amtrak couldn’t figure out “something” between its Amfleet and Horizon fleet, even though I know the Horizon fleet is pretty well stretched right now due to the delay in deployment of the Venture train cars.

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

I’ll have to take a look at this next time I am on Viewliner II sleeper. I thought they flipped locations of the beverage station with that of the linen closet, but guess not.….. The beverage station is better where it presently is (away from shower and bathrooms). And with the public restrooms...

Lake Shore Limited questions (Spring - Summer 2022)

Cardinal has ONE full Viewliner Sleeper (currently a V1, supposed to be getting a V2). Cardinal will also be selling its ”available” roomettes in the Bagg-Dorm Viewliner, but they are all roomettes. Lake Shore Limited has ONE full Viewliner Sleeper for its Boston section (V1), and then TWO...

    Baggage checking

OK - so if checked baggage use is reduced - either due to the passenger’s option/trend OR Amtrak eliminates “checked baggage” at a particular station stop - then WHY order 70+ baggage cars??? It’s not like these cars are old! Amtrak just retired the Heritage Baggage cars a few years ago to put...

    Baggage checking

Clearly it has been proved that Amtrak can even be creative enough to use a Superliner Trans/Dorm Sleeper as a make-shift baggage car (as seen with the Portland section of the Empire Builder this past winter). The future of baggage service and the baggage cars remain utmost mystery. There’s too...

    Rude Amtrak employees

I know this may not be too professional and kind either, but if the Amtrak employee started “barking” at me in rude and unprofessional tones (like with the elderly couple above), I am calling it out right there on the scene. Sorry, but its called being human and doing your job. Just give the...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

Goes to show how deep the staffing cuts were when COVID hit. Should it have went that far? We have 20/20 hindsight now, but surprisingly Amtrak didn’t even consider any service north of Seattle (e,g, Bellingham to Seattle service) unless it went all the way. The lead time to re-start service...

    Riding in Coach

My main apprehension with traveling coach overnight is having a seatmate. And it might be more for their overall comfort than mine. To be honest, I’d be afraid I’d break into snoring, or my arm/leg making the wrong jolt at the wrong time. If I could guarantee the seat next to me would be empty...

    Amtrak long distance fares 2021-2023

Take this for what it is worth, but I have met a LOT of SCA's and even LSA's on the Lake Shore Limited that are not fond of the Viewliner II Sleepers. They've held criticism with the lack of storage (e.g. the linen closet), the way the shower is setup (storage presumably again), and even the...

    Issues with Amtrak reservation system

My last few trips on the CA Zephyr - pre-COVID - I had to book in segments to get ”all the way” in sleeper from Chicago to Emeryville. Even happened in 2013 when there was a third sleeper line in place from Chicago to Emeryville. It was a BUSY train in peak season and still is. Chicago to...

    Empire Builder consist?

Recent Consist has restored the Builder to where it was last Fall when operating daily - thank God! Locomotive Locomotive Locomotive (as required by BNSF or new LD locomotive added) SEA - Viewliner Baggage SEA - Superliner Trans-Dorm Sleeper (with revenue space being sold) SEA - Superliner...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

Agree with you on a stop needed at Blaine, WA. I had thought when the Cascade train to Vancouver first launched there was a station stop south of Blaine that would have helped ease this (or perhaps one was strongly proposed but never got built). It would have helped to maintain the Bellingham...

BC gone on the LSL after July 2?, 2022

Now that's always a good question - when equipment is removed like this, where is it bound? I do think the Lake Shore Limited needs a full cafe/lounge car - in the form of a Amfleet II Diner Lite or Amfleet I cafe/lounge. The current half business class and half cafe car just is not sufficient...

    Viewliner II Bag-Dorm roomettes

They can close the door and put a lock on to keep "regular passengers" out of the baggage portion of the Bagg-Dorm car. Not that complicated folks! There's eight roomettes in the Bagg-Dorm, many of which are not being used on the Cardinal due to a small OBS staff. They need capacity - so open it up!

What scheduling changes would you like?

The westbound Empire Builder's schedule could be tightened up a bit, but it would eliminate the "recovery times" built in to the schedule. Many times I've arrived into Minot an hour early or so, and have also been 30 to 45 minutes early into Shelby (same trips). The westbound can do quite well...

Empire Builder disruption due to freight derailment (5/1/22)

The Empire Builder trains are running VERY full and have been for months. Coach has some availability but sleeper is pretty booked months out (and this includes using the Superliner Trans-Dorm Sleeper's roomettes). This is Amtrak's busiest long distance train in terms of total passengers hauled...

Reminiscing about SFZ/CZ, Pioneer and Desert Wind

I remember the Pioneer having sort of a "branded" Diner/Lounge. Never recall a Superliner Sightseer Lounge for the Pioneer either. I believe it started as a Hi-Level "Diner/Lounge" and then migrated to being a Superliner "Diner/Lounge." One also has to remember that in order to maintain daily...

    VIA Rail and bilevel cars

I just re-read an article from PTJ on Sunday that laid out how VIA was basically "on the brink" in 1984 and 1985. Transport Canada was investigating and trying to "figure it out" for VIA. Passenger ridership was heavily declining and the subsidy provided from the crow was heavily increasing...

    Viewliner II Bag-Dorm roomettes

It's been reported now by a couple of sources that the Cardinal will see excess roomettes in the Viewliner Bagg-Dorm sold as revenue space (summer months or peak period). Not sure when or if it has been loaded into the reservation system. There's only a few roomettes being used here for staff...

Lake Shore Limited questions (Spring - Summer 2022)

4812 and 4912 have typically been a Viewliner II Sleeper on the Lake Shore Limited. That is NOT to be an absolute, but that's been the pattern for over a year now.......
