Cross-America trip in June; will appreciate advice

Note that #10 would be Shelby to Porland, OR (Oregon) on the Empire Builder. Number 11 would be Portland, OR to Emeryville. Portland, ME (Maine) would add a whole bunch of segments to the trip.

Cross-America trip in June; will appreciate advice

Regarding New York, I often stay in Newark to get cheaper accommodations. There are several hotels within walking distance of Newark Penn (Amtrak) Station. At Newark Penn, you can get frequent NJ Transit (commuter) service into New York Penn Station. You can also take PATH, which is a...

Where are the sleeper cars on the west coast?

After you get the page where you can see the available itineraries (there's just one for OKJ->PDX), there are two radio buttons: 1 reserved coach seat 1 lower level coach seat Right below that is a blue button that says Buy Rooms. Click on that, and it shows you 3 options: Superliner...

    I-5 Bridge Collapse

It seems to me that the bridge should have been designed so that in the case of a strike, the structure would be resistant enough so as not to buckle upon impact. Additionally, the principles of redunancy would suggest that if a beam was taken out by a vehicle strike (shouldn't happen, as...

New Talgos moving westward for testing

In this case, "attendant problem" doesn't mean "a problem affecting the onboard service personnel", it means "...would make it longer than the Auto Train, with various associated problems." From the Harper Collins English Dictionary: Attendant (adj) - 1. being in attendance 2. associated...

Spot on Lens Won't Go Away

The spot might not be on the exterior of the lens but rather on the sensor or on the inside of the lens. They make little pump blower implements that you can get at camera shops which is one way to clean out the inside of the camera. That is if you have a camera with a removable lens.

    Heartland Flyer Scuppered

    That's okay. It happened yesterday.

Am I worried about nothing, riding the Adirondack

By the way, the abbreviation for the Canadian Dollar is CAD$, not CDN. I would advise having some cash on hand in case of emergency. Your credit card will probably work fine, but what happens if there's a power outage, or your card doesn't work for some reason? It's always good to have at least...

Am I worried about nothing, riding the Adirondack

Yes, to reiterate, the Adirondack is a reserved train. That means that if you have a ticket, you have a seat. Now, the seats are not assigned ahead of time, (your ticket will not have a seat number on it), but you're getting on at the very first station. You shouldn't have any problems getting...

Maryland passes gas tax increase - good news for Purple & Red Line

I'd love to see some MARC ACS-64s. But I also know that MARC management would prefer to have a uniform fleet of locomotives (meaning all MP-36s). On the other hand, I don't think there's any way MARC can get the accelleration it needs for corridor ops with those MP36s. And, yes, I do know that...

    Parking at Metro Greenbelt, MD

I use Greenbelt station daily (albeit as a bus rider, but still). The long-term parking spaces are located on the extreme north side of the lot, just west of the entrance from the Metro access drive from Cherrywood Lane. Because they're so far from the station, they're not very much in demand...

how much does Amtrak pay to use CSX tracks?

Regarding the host railroad, you can see a map for each route. Go to the train performance page and click any route: http://www.amtrak.com/historical-on-time-performance For example, here's a link to the Crescent's performance page...

    Adirondack questions

Thank you for the clarification. Doesn't change anything for the anglophone crossing the border, though. Basic point: If you ride the Adirondack into Canada, the ASFC/CBSA will greet you in French. However, they do speak English.

    Adirondack questions

Except that in Quebec, French is more equal than English. In Quebec, the ASFC is required to greet you in French first.

    Adirondack questions

This is because it's the law in Quebec. Whether you're talking to a border patrol agent or a barista, in Quebec, the law says customers must be greeted first in French. It's actually quite organized up there. You walk into a shop, and the clerk says "Bonjour!". If you say "Bonjuor. Comment ca...

    Adirondack questions

Yes, the scenery is very good on the Adirondack. Between New York and Albany, the best scenery is on the left. (sample below): Between Albany and Montreal, the best scenery is on the right. (sample below): Note: Both of these photos were taken from the southbound Adirondack. For the...

    Siemens ACS-64 roll-out in Sacramento

In the video posted on the Amtrak Blog (and in reply #13 here), at least one of the locomotives does not have the flag. So maybe it won't be on all of them.

    Siemens ACS-64 roll-out in Sacramento

I agree. I don't like the paintjob on the side. Maybe it's just for the first unit. One of Portland's Streetcars has "MADE IN THE USA" on as its paint scheme, but that was for the first Oregon Iron Works car. Also, as an aside, since there are already TWO misuses of the terms in this nascent...

Phoenix area light rail -- useful for short-term visitor?

That depends very much on where you want to go. (That's sort of like asking, "Is Amtrak useful for getting around?") There's not a whole lot to do in Downtown Phoenix. Tempe, on the other hand, is very nice. And it is on the light rail. I was in Phoenix for a weekend back in 2012. I stayed in...
