    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Whether or not to chat with a coach seat neighbor is its own thing... especially on a full train. Especially in the East where there are many traveling for business... I would respect the needs and desires of others when seated in coach. BTW: Very awkward where the isle pax needs to reach...

I should also add it would be a pleasure to have a conversation with you at the dinner table 😊

Reminiscing about SFZ/CZ, Pioneer and Desert Wind

My recollection was when I rode the Pioneer from CHI splitting to three sections in DEN I continued on the LAX section... took the CS to PDX, then back to CHI via DEN where the three sections rejoined. Each PAX received paper vouchers good for a meal in the diner... enough for the duration of...

PAX should get what they have paid for and have every right to be assertive. Forced community seating isn't right... perhaps appropriate for grammar school lunchroom... but not for adults on a train. There should be a choice for meal seating. But Amtrak doesn't have the facilities to allow open...

Assigned table seating presents a wide variety of possibilities. If everyone at the table is a single, than conversation can go in any direction... I've always experienced some kind of positive interchanges. A single at a table with a couple... usually there is some conversation between both...

Unhappy pax all hope... while unglued management doesn't care. Not a good fit...

    Bringing a cup holder

That and a few swigs of 'southern hospitality vitamin juice' and you will sleep just fine! 😊 😊 😊

I agree... safety belts needed on the Chief and also the Cardinal... 'rough ridin' trains!'

Dining and socializing patterns vary... on the NEC the pace is quicker and more business like. Many of the travelers use the train because it is the most efficient way to get from point A to point B. But on the CZ, the CS, and other LD trains known for the scenery... the purpose of travel is...

There have been some fascinating conversations on the EB... was talking with two just married in their very early 20's a few years ago... just after leaving Fargo. Asked what they did... they said they were retired... a large fracking company had bought out a large farm they'd inherited and were...

    Bringing a cup holder

The most obvious idea when you want to keep your cup stable on a moving train... use the Amtrak cardboard tray with its recessed cup holder that pushes in providing a space to put your cup. Just ask for one at he cafe and/or diner. BTW when I request a glass of ice from the cafe [free of charge...

I agree... what you said makes perfect sense. Both facilities and staffing have been cut back which reduce options. Someone on the forum stated that the SCA refused to bring their meal to the room. [Maybe because he was assigned the tasks of 2 or three people.] That pax should then have the...

Yes... when the mask mandate was removed I assumed Amtrak would go back to community dining.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

So many situation specific ideas for this topic. Meeting a stranger traveler can go in any direction... however... most of the time they are eager to talk about the journey, their destination, and their home. Many times I found myself in excellent conversation... but the traveler has a cold or...

RE Service fluctuations and the numerous and constant difficulties that seem to be going on and on... After all is said and done... what are AU'ers take on the how of tipping SCA's on basic services, protocols, and amenities provided to sleeper passengers so expensively charged... I mean...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

IMHO if I want to have a quiet dinner in silence I eat in my room and enjoy the scenery... which I do often. When I go to the dining room it is with the hope of meeting others who are traveling on the train and engage in conversation... which is one of the biggest advantages of train travel...

California Zephyr or Empire Builder next week?

Like so many others the CZ is my favorite train... the Sierra Nevadas of CALI and the Colorado Rockies the next day... A double dose of the best scenery you can imagine... Beautiful!!! I take it east departing from EUG and connect in Martinez to go east. Unfortunately when going in the other...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

When seated for a meal with others on an Amtrak trip... I've always been fascinated with where others are from and in general, their story. To me it is just part of rail travel and its good manners. On the downside, when seated with someone totally involved with their cell phone... talking...

Are we talking about dining on an Amtrak train or a 7th grade study hall???

According to medical sources a normal adult should consume eight 8 oz glasses of water a day... especially if there are medical conditions which require the body's ability to cleanse itself. The suggestion of knocking on doors to bum water off of 'your neighbors' is silly. The need water too.
