Lesser known Railroad Museums in small towns

I was wondering why a "Road Museum" would have trains ...

Mechanical Solari Board to return to Philadelphia 30th Street Station

The Philadelphia area has enough colleges that someone should see if one of them would/could take on the project as a perennial project ... that way new people could be taught the engineering, skills and interest on a regular basis - it would be as good as teaching "modern dance" or some of the...

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

That's because the mentality is: "If you keep saying it - it must be true or will happen" ... even though time has proven otherwise. Use that same ideology for the Interstate Highway System and see how many roads get widened. No one seem to care that the highways do not pay for themselves or...

Lesser known Railroad Museums in small towns

Not exactly a "museum" since it is the building that is the relic, not what's inside. Part of this Depot in Gainesville, Florida was built around 1860. It is one of only three surviving railroad depots in the state built prior to the start of the American Civil War...

Mechanical Solari Board to return to Philadelphia 30th Street Station

Yes, I read about this the other day and wondered why they don't just have it "in addition" to the new displays instead of just an art piece. Bring it back - but allow it to function!

Why was he walking on the roof of the car in the first place

    Amtrak public Board Meeting (12/1/22)

I signed up online before the deadline and after completing the form and indicating "virtual" it said I would "soon receive the information to connect" by email - that was the last I heard until I saw this thread just now ...

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

Since the differences in train and plane travel differ so much - it just seems like comparing them to each other is not exactly apples-to-apples If I understand correctly, even first-class in air is still, basically, "coach" - business class and first-class on Acella is "coach" type seating...

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

Don't know if you would consider it "medical reasons" but I have a fear of heights that prevents me from even considering flying. I know many other who are the same as me. I also know several who would rather drive that "endure the hassles of flying" (as they put it) even though they have to...

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

I don't fly so I don't know how everything works. Does the first-class ticket on a plane get one a private room with a seat that can be turned into a bed whenever you want to and a private table for dining?

A 6-battery bank of LiFePo4 48v batteries is over 30 kWh and has more than enough to handle several switches for several days

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

LiFePo4 batteries can be used to power an entire house and/or shop including devises like miter saws, welders and plasma cutters - yes, they can handle switches

Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

Yes, that is why my post included the words "and beyond" (when it comes to restoring service from NO to JAX and beyond) - as several brought up running the train to Orlando after JAX I am well acquainted with the N/S line that runs through Waldo as I went to elementary school in Waldo and still...

Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

Ah! But that is not now, nor has it ever been an Amtrak depot. That depot was built around 1860 to serve the Florida Railroad, which reached Gainesville from Fernandina in 1859. Depot operations were moved to a new building where East University Avenue crossed the rail line in January, 1948...

Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

If it were still possible to go between Tallahassee and Gainesville, I think there may be more interest if connecting both Universities by train - but, since the tracks are no longer in place and Gainesville, unlike Tallahassee. doesn't even have a "closed" depot that could be "opened" - the...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

With today's solar panels and LiFePo4 batteries they may be able to get a week of power for lights and switches with a battery bank and the proper inverters. They don't take up much space and last for a very long time.

Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

With the size of Jacksonville and how busy JAX can be, you' think the station would be bigger This is the JAX station - as you can see, not much parking And not all that much seating

    Fulfilling a lifelong dream

It should be noted that the train(s) shown between Jacksonville and New Orleans no longer exists - at least, it no longer operates.
