Travelling in a Superliner Roomette on lower deck

One advantage (an unusual one, to be sure) to a lower level roomette is that it makes taking one's service dog off the train for a pee much easier.

Flying by LCC, ULCC and Charter

I thought this was a rail forum, but what do I know.

Why do people work in on-board jobs on long-distance trains?

When I was writing "Zephyr" a number of sleeper and coach attendants on that train told me they were studying for bachelor's degrees at local Chicago universities during their off time. I believe at least one rose to Amtrak management level.

Trains told to get rid of torrent of 'Tannoy spam'

I don't know what this Tannoy fuss is all about, but then I've been totally deaf for 79 years. Now I usually cringe when people tell me I'm lucky I'm deaf, but in this case I will make an exemption.

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

I believe the IRS expects train service crew to report a certain portion of their income in tips.

Cessna crashes onto tracks; struck by Metrolink train

As a private pilot I was struck by the fact that there was no fuel fire, either upon landing or the train strike. That makes me wonder if the pilot took off with nearly empty tanks and just ran out of gas.

    20% point deduction for canceling?

My wife and I (we are octogenarians) cancelled our round trip in sleeper from Chicago to D.C. a week ahead of Dec. 22 departure and I got ALL the points back. We cited the covid tsunami as the reason and that was good enough for the agent.

Amazing how many rail professionals are on this forum

On one forum devoted to the Lake Shore Limited (Facebook?), the official rules forbade the monicker "Late Shore Limited" as offensive. Never did learn whether that was serious or tongue-in-cheek.

    2nd bucket list trip

I travel with a service dog. Roomettes are rather small for the two of us. Bedrooms are best, but we also like the family room because there's room on the floor for the pooch. Same with the accessible bedroom.

    VL II handicapped bedroom impressions

Amtrak marketing wants us to call it the "Accessible Bedroom." The word "handicapped" is passe in a woke society. Now if people would start calling them "Fresh Air Stops" rather than "Smoke Stops" . . . .

    Getting from Seattle to Vancouver

I'd like to plan a 2022 vacation, Chicago to Seattle on the Builder, thence Seattle to Vancouver, thence Vancouver to Alaska via cruise ship. What's the best way to get from Seattle to Vancouver? Bus? Ferry? I understand Amtrak is not crossing the border yet.

    Covid Mask Mandate for Transportation

We may be masking for years to come. I have laid in a supply of the KN95 masks the NYT's consumer testing team recommended. And I'm 81 and have had the booster.

    Positive comments about Amtrak?

I like Amtrak travel so much that I could write a book about it. And have.

Most interesting encounter(s) on a train

My most interesting encounter was in the diner on a westbound Canadian with a middle-aged man and his wife returning from a holiday in Halifax. We covered all sorts of subjects, especially Canadian history, and he was so articulate and knowledgable that I deduced he must be a professor of...

You eat in your room? Why?

I am deaf, and my speech is hard for many people to understand. Some folks across the table just can't handle it and pretend I'm not there. Some have even asked to be seated elsewhere. Others have risen to the challenge and matched my efforts to communicate, and we have had intelligent and even...

Is Solo a Good way to Travel Amtrak?

As a service dog handler all I can say is that Amtrak, for the most part, has been very hospitable to us. Attendants and conductors have been understanding and soliticous, except for one on the California Zephyr who was a clear dog-hater and forbade us to go to the dining car. Other conductors...

Chicago to Toronto via Detroit and Windsor

While I have everyone's attention, how difficult is it to get from Seattle to Vancouver BC and return by train these days? Are there covid hoops one must jump through? Must one be vaccinated and also get a covid test before crossing into Canada? I flew many times (pre-covid) with my service...

Chicago to Toronto via Detroit and Windsor

Thanks to all. I had no idea how fraught the border crossing is, and had stupidly assumed that everything would be copacetic by July 2022.

Chicago to Toronto via Detroit and Windsor

I'm planning to travel from Chicago to Toronto in July to catch the Canadian for a trip to Vancouver. Has anyone on this forum taken the Chicago-Detroit-Windsor-Toronto route? I'm wondering how difficult (or expensive) it would be to get across the river from Detroit to Windsor via Uber from the...

Boston Globe travel article about the EB

I hope the sleeper attendant's name really was George! That stopped me cold for a moment.
