    Route Timetable PDFs returning? (2021-2022)

This thread is valuable to me, and I thank in particular the folks who mentioned Dixieland Software. I travel with a service dog, and need to know the best (longer) stops to get off to relieve the dog. Of course conductors will hold a train for a service dog in an emergency, but it's best not to...

    Coke or Pepsi?

Me_Little_Me's comment about water being full of germs reminds me of the remark attributed to the bibulous W.C. Fields: "Water? Indeed not! Fish * * * * in it!"

Rumors on Facebook about Amtrak removing 530/630 car line number

This has nothing specific to do with the 530/630 issue, but the phrase Sleepers on the Rear sounds as if it would make a good mystery novel (or movie) title. Like Snakes on a Plane.

    Covid Mask Mandate for Transportation

I am a totally deaf person who lipreads and of course cannot understand the speech of anyone who wears a mask. I am completely vaccinated, too. But I still believe in masking and distancing until herd immunity is achieved. The choice is clear: a little temporary annoyance for the general health...

    The Boeing MAX 8 Accidents

To be fair to Boeing, the recall involves about 60 out of the 800-some 737 Maxes already built, and the flaw is in a backup system. The flaw was discovered in normal inspections, not via accident . . . the system is working as it should. It is an area of concern but the sky is not falling.

Have you been recognized by Amtrak staff due to frequent travel?

Sometimes they know your name, especially when it appears on the manifest. Back in 1994 I published a book called "Zephyr: Tracking a Dream Across America." It treated, among other things, the life of the on-board crew. Now and again when I'm riding that train, an old-timer on the crew will stop...

    Should Amtrak allow smoking again?

I can't believe we're even having this discussion.

    Covid will dictate the future

Here's another vote for double masking (or N95/KN95 masking if readily available). A week ago I had my second Pfizer *** (with a rather marked reaction) but have no plans to travel, eat at restaurants, or go to venues of multiple people, or even visit my family indoors. There are just too many...

Sins Against Humanity are a Part of American Railroad History

20th Century Rider, thank you for starting this thread. It definitely is part of railroad history and culture and cannot be buried in the sand of denial.

Chicago to Minneapolis Saint Paul - Amtrak Bus question

I've ridden Megabus with my service dog from Chicago to St. Paul. It's OK, but I'm only 5-6 so can't speak to height. Plenty of knee room. I did buy a seat for my dog.

    New DOT Service Animal definitions

As a service dog handler myself (I use a dog specifically trained to alert me to sounds such as the doorbell, fire alarm, ring of captioned phone, oven timer, alarm clock, call of my name, etc.), I applaud DOT's new rules. They will make life easier for me and my dog in airports and on...

    The Boeing MAX 8 Accidents

News broke yesterday that Ryanair, the Irish budget airline, had contracted to buy 75 new 737 Maxes.

Checking up on Amtrak's (lack of) ADA compliance

Half mini schnauzer, half mini poodle, according to the DNA test. Hearing dogs are sometimes small terriers, often rescues picked by training organizations or their intelligence and energy. Trooper loves to travel by train and eagerly leaps aboard every time. Kind of like me.

Checking up on Amtrak's (lack of) ADA compliance

I am deaf and use a service dog, and have found both ticket and OBS personnel to be extremely accommodating. Only once did I have a problem. On the Zephyr in Iowa when an overzealous conductor told us we could not go to the dining car together because people didn't want to eat with dogs. The...

    Post-vaccine Amtrak travel

Anti-vaxx=anti-science. That is all I have to say.

    Joe Biden Campaign Train

This thread reminds me of the legend about **** Tuck, the Democratic prankster who, as Richard Nixon was speaking from the observation car of his campaign train, signaled the engineer to pull out before Nixon finished his speech.

Gay male friend wants to become a conductor, BUT...

It's hard to believe we're still having this conversation in 2020 . . . but some folks seem not to have progressed past 1875. One's sexuality matters only when you're looking for someone to share a bed with. At all other times it doesn't.

    Bedroom vs Family room

My wife, my service dog, and I have traveled in both . . . and I don't know about my wife, but I prefer the family bedroom, since we can stack our luggage on the upper kid bunk and the dog can take the lower kid bunk. Actually my favorite is the very roomy accessible (handicap) room, which will...

    Self-defense (on train)?

The only violence I fear on Amtrak these days is to my stomach from the prepackaged "food." I leave my bear spray at home and carry a large and heavy roll of Tums.

    Self-defense (on train)?

If you get caught by the cops with pepper spray, tell them it's for bears. "What bears?" they will reply. "See?" you reply. "It works."
