Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

The situation is grave, Admiral. We won't have diners for six "days". Sleeper power has temporarily failed. Restoration may be possible, in two "days". By the book, Admiral.

Which route(s) do you travel the most?

Empire Service, ALB-NYP, several hundred times. Followed by NYP-WAS by a few hundred times. (Work used to take me to NYP quite a bit. Then had a job in DC where I commuted almost weekly, so roughly 30-40 trips a year for 4+ years.) After that, probably the Crescent (once or twice a year in...

    Am fleet 1 seat re-do

I hope with that design, they have strong seatbelts!

Exactly. They won't bother to put diners back onto the LSL until all the Heritage diners are gone. Just not economically a good idea.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect anything before December at the ABSOLUTE earliest at this rate. Probably Feb is my guess.

It won't get "one". It'll get all or none. So that means at least delivery of I think 4 more. You really can't offer a service where a train sometimes has a diner and sometimes doesn't. So, you need enough delivered to cover all the trainsets. So it'll be a few months at least.

In addition, shells sitting outside, says nothing about work being done inside. My understanding is a lot (if not all?) shells are complete. It's the interior work that is slowing things down. In fact I'd honestly be more worried if where were no shells outside.

    Hotel near D.C. Union Station

Love this place, but the rooms are a bit small in my experience.

    Trains from BWI

What the above folks said. They're no different looking than the parking shuttles. (just don't get on the wrong ones :-) One note, if you get in really late, MARC trains will have stopped running as will possibly Amtrak trains. It's quite possible to get a cab from the BWI train station to...

I'm completely confused. That was what has been there all along and no broken link on this end.

No, I think you misunderstood the 2nd picture.

Exactly. ThirdRail7's posts add a bit of levity, and honestly, information to this thread. There's several useful tidbits of information in that single post. All somewhat telling.

Well in most of the US, exit numbers correspond to the mileage marker in a southbound or westbound direction. (Except ironically enough in NYS). But, I suspect you don't mean the exit number. Interesting and good news I guess.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

The only real if.... is IF Congress will ever fund any replacements. I'm not hopeful. Folks we need to get on our Congresscritter's cases here.

    Alternate travel times.

Ah, interesting for some reason, I had thought the Scout was w/o sleepers. Thanks for the correction.

    Alternate travel times.

I've argued for awhile that at least some routes need additional trains, though in general I'd argue more like 6 or so hours off. The reason being that in general you can get better utilization of the stations in route. Also, you could probably get away with couch only trains at first. Imagine...

What is going on with the Lake Shore Limited (mainly Boston Section)

Looks like CAF has hit their 2 diners a month delivery goal (well 2 months in a row now roughly). So, by say October, there should in there be 2-4 more diners available (depending when in the month). HOWEVER, it seems like the ones delivered are still having teething problems so that doesn't...

Sleeping in coach vs room for single overnight trip

I take the Crescent to Atlanta pretty much once a year. On the way do, coach because it's cheap (though Business Class turned out to be worth the upgrade!) and on the way back, sleeper because I'm often dirty from caving and want to take a shower.

You'd think with so many on property they could by now keep at least 2-3 at a time in revenue service. VERY frustrating.
