    Trip to Washington, DC

So you know, it's the Red Line that has its station in Union Station. This is one of six colored lines. Generally if you head towards Shady Grove and change at Metro Center or Gallery Place you can get where you want to go. Anything more specific you need? Oh.. stand right, walk left on the...

A thought starter about environment and trains.

BTW, I'd stop with using gallons burned per hour. That's fairly meaningless. Generally the value used is gallons per passenger mile. For details on how various things shake out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_efficiency_in_transportation#Units_of_measurement So consider something like...

    Penn Station Food

You know, I've always avoided Tracks, partly because for me it's in the far opposite corner of the station and partly because from the outside, always struck me as if it might be one of those overpriced places NYS is famous for. But I will now rethink that.

    Amtrak should be worried

Price point and free food is nice. But I'll probably stick with the train.

No Dome on the Hiawathas again

And it's classified as a non-revenue car I believe (i.e. you can't buy seats in it specifically) so all the downside of costs and none of the upsides of income.

No Dome on the Hiawathas again

And as I've suggested elsewhere, there are still several of the Great Northern Domes left. (I believe 4 others are extent). I do think Amtrak should make an effort to acquire them. A fleet of 5 isn't any worse than a fleet of 1 when it comes to maintenance (and perhaps is a bit easier and...

Commuting Newark to New York City on Amtrak?

My understanding is that no, the ten-ride tickets do not have to be reserved. If the money is good enough though, $25 isn't so bad.

    Tri-Weekly or Every Other Day?

So, if I'm following your question, you're asking should a train run Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays like the Cardinal, or run every other day such as: Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Monday, Wednesday Friday, Sunday? (because if you mean "every other day, but same schedule every week...

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

Dang, I'm going to miss it at Albany then. :-(

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

While you're right about the Amfleet II cars, the stated Amtrak goal in one of their plans is to replace the entire fleet of Amfleet Is and IIs. That's 650 cars. Plus ideally another 100-150 more (at least) in expansion. And the goal was to do so at a rate of about 100+ a year. Hence my...

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

Well, let's start with we don't know why the cars are behind and if the same reason would impact coach cars. And we have no real evidence that any other builder would do any better. CAF at least has a production line going. I actually think the bigger problem would be that any single-level...

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

Yeah, the 2-3 a month for 6 months definitely doesn't add up to 25. But I'll take them. But, I think we're close to half a year or longer away from the LSL getting its diners back because my guess is the first batch of diners will replace the existing Heritage diners first. So... need the...

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

I'd be shocked if any of the Viewdiners, including Annapolis are in service by Thanksgiving.

    Acela Competition?

I think given time the busses will do that do themselves!

    Acela Competition?

I don't think it'll make that much of a difference. Acela definitely decimated NYC-WAS air shuttle travel because of its performance. I think it's grabbed about as much of NYC-BOS as it can because that's a longer route and flying can save enough time there. Honestly, I'm a bit surprised Jet...

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

You've never ridden with me then.I have sent food back and gotten better food in its place. I believe once it was a steak on the Crescent and the other time was a meal on the Acela that was overcooked.

    Another Thread About NYP

There are bathrooms on the Amtrak section of the concourse, but not in the waiting area itself. (The waiting area is sort of a bullpen in the middle of the concourse itself). Last time I used the men's room it was adequate. If you are travelling in First Class, the bathrooms in the Acela...

    Wi-Fi on Viewliner Cars?

Often I'm travelling during work days. I can get work done this way.

Showers on Amtrak Sleepers - What are they like?

I can't recall ever waiting for a shower. And like others, I have found them to be clean and plenty of towels. The only issue I've ever had is sometimes a bit cold if the outside temp is cold. But I just turn up the heat and I'm good when I get out. It's the highlight of my trip sometimes.

The next few years, take 2

As far as hotel power at Albany, I believe it's there (it may not be in use yet though).
