    Autotrain Services Drastically Cut?

Which would then cause it to lose just as much if not more than all the other LD routes. At least other LD routes provide essential transportation between intermediate points, often to people who do not own cars. The AT is an upmarket service targeted towards upmarket travelers.

    Hypothetical High Platform Superliner Replacements

This is a reasonable accommodation. All the ADA requires is a reasonable accommodation. You're saying that like Amtrak has no ability or agency to control modifications at the stations and platforms they stop at. I don't think this is the case. Further, the height of platforms has nothing to...

    Hypothetical High Platform Superliner Replacements

In case it wasn't already mentioned, new Bi-Level cars were attempted but didn't go forward: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_Generation_Bi-Level_Passenger_Rail_Car

    Hypothetical High Platform Superliner Replacements

So you're totally fine building a new platform that's locked into the same stations/routes currently served with no hope of expanding further. There's something to be said for a national standard for long distance passenger rail platforms, if you're going to rebuild them anyway.

    Hypothetical High Platform Superliner Replacements

Same here, I will always treasure my Superliner memories...and those yet to come! But there's a reason their replacement platform proposal died.

    Hypothetical High Platform Superliner Replacements

Amtrak is not an airline. Amtrak crews go way deeper into the rolling stock than airlines go into their aircraft. Amtrak rebuilds of cars from manufacturers no longer in business because there's no alternative, where airlines generally avoid anything beyond routine maintenance and rely on the...

    Hypothetical High Platform Superliner Replacements

Amtrak can and should run longer trains. That isn't really an advantage. The disadvantages (in summary): * Higher center of gravity means it costs a lot more to build a new car to the same safety specs as a single-level car. * Accessibility concerns onboard * Having to rebuild rail...

    Texas Eagle Sightseer lounge discontinued

It's not really to their advantage, unless they want to kill dining on the LD trains. My reasoning is that switching would be a herculean retraining headache for the staff on top of yet another thing to add to their antiquated booking system.

    Texas Eagle Sightseer lounge discontinued

Making meals optional on the sleepers creates many more problems than it solves. The savings isn't going to be much more than a difference between buckets. For that, you'll have hungry passengers who didn't realize their tickets didn't have meals, OBS barking for proof from customers who do...

As far as fine dining that's far better selection/value for what you pay, I'd recommend Le Colonial. I've never had a bad experience there and even gone in Carhartts. https://www.lecolonialchicago.com/

    Train speed weirdness

Indeed. If you can't even get half of the country to wear masks for a few years to end a pandemic, how do you expect them to go metric?

It's a handy tool to have if your dates are flexible and you want to know if you're getting the lowest price.

Well, you know how much snowpack you have for the year by late February.

Brightline, "conservative" policy, and the future of rail

Yet, you know it's measured differently from precipitation that falls on the population area and the volume of supply is known months in advance so you can plan accordingly. There's not much you can do when you count on unpredictable rainfall. An area that gets virtually no precipitation can...

Need Amtrak trip and route planning help. Who should I contact?

Agreed. The other non-obvious thing is that the bucket chart refers to pricing across the entire route. What would be most helpful is actually giving routing and costs, perhaps competing to see who can craft the cheapest journey across that route.

Brightline, "conservative" policy, and the future of rail

Most of Phoenix's water comes from salt river valley snowpack. By virtue of being a valley with one outlet, the area is more suited for groundwater replenishment than other desert cities. You're always going to have some evap, especially in sprinkler usage. The critical thing is making sure...

Brightline, "conservative" policy, and the future of rail

The question is not so much the amount of rainfall as much as what's captured over a very long period and what leaves the area (into the ocean). The primally problem with most drought areas is fresh water bring flushed out into the ocean faster than it gets replenished, usually with snowpack.

Mostly rainwater, runoff and reclaimed water. They actually treat wastewater specifically for groundwater replenishment.

Need Amtrak trip and route planning help. Who should I contact?

It is. $656 and $799 are the lower buckets I found in February. You might be able to find a slightly lower fare for the whole trip starting in late January. Shall we play Fare Golf?

Need Amtrak trip and route planning help. Who should I contact?

If we're playing Amtrak Fare Golf: $4,827 I'm actually a bit surprised I could do an around-the-country trip in sleepers for under $5k. All prices quoted in Roomettes for two Passengers, assuming Rail Passenger Association discount. (Family membership is $80). Prices searched on 9/12/21...
