Rocky Mountaineer and Pacific Northwest island hopping

This morning, after waking up, eating, and gathering my belongings, I set off to Vancouver using the BC Ferries Connector. I had considered using that last year, but the first run was just too late as I wanted to maximize my time in Victoria. This time, the timing of one of the runs worked...

Rocky Mountaineer and Pacific Northwest island hopping

There are a few ways to get from the San Juan Islands to Vancouver. I had considered taking the ferry to the mainland, doing bus/Uber/cab to Mount Vernon, and catching the Cascades (or a bus, though I’d far prefer Amtrak) to Vancouver. Another would be taking the ferry to Sidney, BC, and then...

Rocky Mountaineer and Pacific Northwest island hopping

After visiting the Pacific Northwest on last year’s Canadian-Empire Builder loop trip, I’m back again! This time, I’m going to take the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff - but first, I‘m doing some island hopping in the Pacific Northwest. The trip began last Saturday, when I flew Delta...

    Booking online on Amtrak website

It also may be that the system is not allowing “connections” from one segment to the next on the same train that have too short of time between arrival and departure. Had this happen on the Lake Shore Limited when attempting to book PHI-TOL-ARB when my desired Regional showed up for PHI-TOL but...

    Capitol Limited discussion

Aah - so that’s why I’m seeing the Capitol Limited consistently higher than the Lake Shore Limited and seemingly not budging! Having only one sleeper definitely helps explain it - I’ve been monitoring CL roomette pricing for the trip to the Gathering, and it’s consistently remained $200 more...

Travel from Vancouver to San Diego advice?

That’s of course assuming the OP meant Vancouver, BC (in Canada) as opposed to Vancouver, WA (in the US). Which is probably the case, though you have to be careful to not pick the wrong one when booking. You can in fact book a ticket from Vancouver, BC to SLO (and potentially all the way to San...

    Capitol Limited discussion

I was looking at booking the Capitol Limited for my trip to the Gathering (Wednesday, October 25th). I’ve been monitoring roomette prices for a while not and they haven’t budged from high bucket (I booked the return via the Lake Shore when I saw lower-bucket rooms a few weeks ago).Should I bite...

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

That’s not what I’m seeing on the Amtrak app now - it seems to show the bus bridge through July 16th. I’d call to get your ticket changed to 1777 and the bus bridge if it hasn’t updated already.

More Greyhound cutbacks and comparison with airlines

I actually just took that Trailways Detroit-Toronto run - do think it’s strange that NY Trailways is doing this. I booked from Ann Arbor via a connection from Indian Trails, and there were like only 4 people on the Detroit-Toronto leg (about the same A2-Detroit). Interestingly, Flixbus also...

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

Service plans have been announced for after June 12: http://pac.surf/trackadvisories This is reduced from the current/previous bus bridge schedule - only 3 trips in each direction between LA and San Diego. Also, there is no connection with the Coast Starlight in either direction at LAX, and no...

    Booking online on Amtrak website

I was looking for the Gathering and seeing similar fares in late October on the Capitol Limited. The Lake Shore Limited was even more, but a couple days ago came down to about $480 CHI-NYP and the reverse. Grabbed that from NYP-TOL (with a PHI-NYP Regional on one end+TOL-ARB bus connection the...

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

The schedule is actually a little different from that - for one, 594 and 794 are now just one combined 794 SLO-SAN rather than 794 north of LAX and 594 south of LAX. There doesn’t seem to be a PDF timetable - the Pacific Surfliner’s site just linked to the Amtrak generated timetables page.

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

Daily service on the Pacific Surfliner through Orange County will be resuming effective April 17th: https://www.pacificsurfliner.com/plan-your-trip/alerts/travel-advisories/ Seems to be 10 trains/day in each direction, with the same schedule on weekdays and weekends.

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

Looks like the connection from the southbound Adirondack to the westbound LSL that existed pre-2020 may be no more - it still arrives at SDY before the LSL, but with less than an hour to spare (and Arrow won’t let you book it). Perhaps they reads it later, though that connection was only...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

The return of the Adirondack is official now: https://media.amtrak.com/2023/03/amtrak-new-york-state-department-of-transportation-and-via-rail-canada-fully-restore-adirondack-service/ It’s now bookable starting April 3, which is in fact when it will be resuming.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Funny that the Silver Star of all trains is the first Eastern LD train to get traditional dining, given its recent history as the “Silver Starvation” with no meals at all aside from the cafe car. Hoping that this eventually extends to all eastern LD trains - would be nice to have it on the...

Greyhound changes + end of interlining/new Indian Trails service in MI

Interesting. Indian Trails’s statement made it sound like most or all carriers had terminated interline agreements with Greyhound - while some have, there are still interline connections (and it seems some added/readded ones). In Michigan losing Indian Trails severely limits Greyhound’s reach -...

Greyhound changes + end of interlining/new Indian Trails service in MI

Recently, Greyhound has shifted away from its own longtime reservation system to one similar to that used by Flixbus. In the process, it seems that at least some interlining agreements with other carriers have ended, including the one with Indian Trails in Michigan. When I’ve used their website...

    Miami Metrorail/Metromover

I thought I was going to follow up my previous Tri-Rail/Brightline trips by going all the way to West Palm Beach and back using Tri-Rail one way and Brightline the other. However, I ended up getting food poisoning on my trip, which kept me from going anywhere for a couple days. In retrospect, I...

Tri-Rail/bus trip (with a special appearance by the Silver Star)

After having taken Brightline up for the NHL All-Star Beach Festival in Fort Lauderdale, I decided to take a combination of buses and Tri-Rail up to see the actual game itself in Sunrise, FL - I wanted to check out Tri-Rail, and with the weather kind of gloomy I wasn’t missing anything at the...
