    Amtrak Route Map

I stand corrected - this is the older archived system timetables I was referring to: http://www.timetables.org/ Spent some time fiddling with the System Map contained in the very first system timetable (1 May 1971) and this is as good as could get it: Note that it does not show any bus...

    Amtrak Route Map

Thanx. Added and brown-dotted the NOL-JAX and FTM - Naples bus links. Tried to get something from those archived timetables on the RPA website, but my decrepit old eyes just can't resolve anything but the largest print. That's why the earliest timetable used was the October 2008 issue on...

    Amtrak Route Map

OK, thanks. Deleted the upper green link to Carmel-Monterey on my file copy of the map in Post #19 and may post it later when no more corrections are noted. Might ask my tech-savvy son how to create a PDF of that map so it could be zoomed in for a closer look.

Thanks. Would that include the green line between Salinas and San Jose?

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024 H1

Thanks for the link to that one. Even though it doesn't give a visual depiction of that the terrain looks like, it does give the daylight period start and end times at the three universally agreed upon twilights (astronomical, nautical and civil). Being a flatland midwesterner, however, I'm...

    Amtrak Route Map

Well, for better or worse here's the latest version: As a reminder, this one has all the bus links I could find since October 2008 (the earliest on Juckins.net). Q1: Were there any other bus links bookable at any time via Amtrak that are not shown? Q2: Are there any other deleted bus links...

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024 H1

Big Q: What's the latest the Eastbound CZ can be at Granby (on some specified date) in order to see all the Eastern slope sights in a reasonable amount of daylight?

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024 H1

Finally found it! It's Google Earth Pro. Tried it for the eastbound CZ at Granby CO for my upcoming trip. Juckins.net sez it's average lateness there is 2¼ hours so I set the date time data for the average delayed time of about 5:27 pm and got this sunlight adjusted view at Granby: Later...

    Amtrak Route Map

Took Arrow for a spin and typed in "las vegas" - lo and behold a drop down menu showed up with the station codes for Las Vegas NM and the three for various places in Las Vegas NV. Probably been that way all along and I didn't try booking to/from each one. Thanks for the kind words and...

    Amtrak Route Map

Don't think it's so much a problem with the system itself but the comprehension of the multiplicity of possibilities when there are 3 separate destinations in Las Vegas NV (LAS airport, LVS bus station and LVT the strip) and getting to (or from) these 3 from (or to) about a dozen likely starting...

    Amtrak Route Map

Things have changed in 3+ years. Looks like now all you can do is book a trip to or from LVS from or to several places in California.

You're welcome! I don't take note of when any of those were either deleted or added. If you really want to know, sift through the archived timetables you can find here: Amtrak Timetable Archives - Home

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024 H1

Once upon a time Google Earth (I think it was) had a feature that would allow selection of date and time to see what it would look like at various times. Can't seem to dredge it up now, but perhaps someone else knows how.

    Amtrak Route Map

Thanks for noting that error. I had them shown as deleted on my working paper copy, but neglected to do that on the version scanned for posting here. FWIW, have been making corrections to the map that was originally posted, and should post the amended one in a few days. Who knows, additional...

First long trip on Amtrak (SAS to VAC)

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, Sidney and Maglev. Hopefully we won't be too late getting into LAX and there'll be enough time to eat somewhere.

    Amtrak Route Map

Some corrections to the map. Delete the connections between: • Flagstaff & Sedona AZ • Williams Junction & Williams AZ • Lansing and Gaylord MI Restore the connection between Louisville and Nashville Please note that some bus connections can only be booked with one direction of train...

First long trip on Amtrak (SAS to VAC)

According to Google Earth., Phillipe's is a 700 yard walk from the westernmost track in LAUS but Denny's is only 400 yards from that same track. I've eaten at Phillipe's but am 80+ YOA, so I'm stickin' to the closer Denny's. Beside that, if the SL is late into LAX the closer eatery makes more...

Why do long distance Amtrak trains travel at very low speeds?

Why do long distance Amtrak trains travel at very low speeds? So those who ride the train just for fun can have more fun! :)

First long trip on Amtrak (SAS to VAC)

Planning on the same connection in Los Angeles next month. If arrival and departure are per the schedule, there's time for breakfast after arrival at 0535. Intend to eat at the 24hr Denny's at the corner of Ramirez and Vignes during the (hopefully) 4¼ hours between trains. It's about a 400...

    Amtrak Route Map

Thanks for the kind word. While riding a bus/train combination may be the best or only way to get between some places, looking at a map is (to me, at least) a quick and easy way to look at the possibilities. If you know where you want to go, the transit mode in Google Maps seems pretty adept...
