Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Thanks for those two confirmations. I also pinned down the two lower adjacent AT bedroom estimates. All these have been added to the chart, but the updated chart won't be posted until a few more estimates are pinned down. No need to clutter up the thread when there are 33 other estimates yet...

Best current options for traveling from Chicago to Florida

CHI to RVR is the first leg of this multi-city trip, so I think the transfer to the bus at CVS is guaranteed. There's only 10 minutes between the train and bus, so I'm guessing the bus won't leave CVS until after the train gets to CVS. Maybe. :)

Best current options for traveling from Chicago to Florida

Although it entails a 1½ hour bus ride, this one's another possibility with checked baggage all the way with no overnight layovers (unless your destination is Tampa) and you're OK with departing Chicago at 1755hrs on a Tu, Th or Sa: • Cardinal from CHI arriving CVS at 1535hrs the next day. •...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Thanks for the kind word! Your bucket list item sounds like a fun challenge. Seven years ago I churned up this one for my bucket list . . . . . .but with todays prices I'd have to sell the house! :) It was the longest trip found that didn't go over the same track twice. Amazing what an...

Long Distance Train Coach & Sleeper Fares (Buckets)

As always, any corrections or confirmations of estimates are more than welcome.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

The odds of finding a single train at the lowest bucket can also be pretty low. :)

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Good, I'll go with that! No reason to expect trains with eight sleeper buckets to follow the same pattern as those with the old-fashioned five sleeper buckets. The new chart is finished and just needs scanning and posting. BTW, have you ever seen an EB coach fare for PDX to SEA offered at...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

There's only one thing holding up posting the new fare bucket chart and that's Coach fares for the EB. If this train follows the pattern of other trains having eight buckets for each type of sleeper then it should have a total of nine different fares for Coach (including the Saver fare(s))...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

This is the easiest to answer of the two: the reason the additional fare of $243 for the second adult in a Roomette is that the first adult pays for the accommodation (room) charge and once that is paid, the additional fare for the second person in that same Roomette is only the rail (coach)...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

There's also a Roomette fare of $669 in between those two. This completes the eight Roomette fares of $602, 669, 749, 844, 959, 1095, 1250 and 1455. Just revised the chart to accommodate eight buckets for all trains and (with a little luck) may have a new chart ready to post in a few days.

    Coast Starlight discussion

    9+ hours = 34h 0m or 35h 21m for its entire route. :)

Is Multi-City booking gone on Amtrak.com?

I finally got your point. Looks like the length of the stopover makes no difference in the total fare these days. Tried NYP to BFX starting 1Feb 2024: • The ML or ES direct were $68 • 6 segments, less than 24 hrs twixt trains was $140 • Same 6 segments, more than 24 hrs twixt trains also...

Is Multi-City booking gone on Amtrak.com?

Nothing at all unusual about total fares for multi-segment trips to increase by 50% or 100% or more over a one train trip. No need to have a hard time with this as it's been this way for ages. If you wanted to add another leg to your trip and spend the night in Cleveland, the total fare would...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

As you may already know, a high bucket Roomette for one adult CHI to/from PDX is currently $1502 - a mere $426 or 40% more than pre-pandemic levels.

    Booking online on Amtrak website

To clarify, the round trip option is indeed broke. Just do two one-way searches - and two one way bookings once you decide.

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

I may be wrong, but if Julie says your reservation is not on file maybe you don't really have one! I'd call ASAP!

Changing origin station on itinerary (in sleeper)?

FWIW, incase you hadn't already looked, a Roomette for one adult from RNO to EMY tomorrow is $165 which is 22$ more than to SAC tomorrow.

    Empire Builder discussion

If fares don't change no matter what date you select it's simply because Amtrak hasn't seen fit to offer any other fares for those dates. The route with fares that change is simply because Amtrak has seen fit to change them. Why? Here other are invited to step in and offer their reasons. As...

Coast Starlight or Sunset Limited for our next trip?

While I suppose it's OK to select a route based on what others feel is scenic, all I'll offer is the suggestion to see for yourself what's along each route using the FRA - Safety Map tailored to show only passenger rail on an imagery background, like this: You can scroll in as close as you'd...
