    Grand Central Sanderson Station

The California Zephyr has had some house-cleaning. From the October 1976 Guide, Naperville has been swapped for Aurora, Princeton has been added, Monmouth has been deleted, Akron has been deleted, [skip the Overland Route] Carlin has been deleted, Sparks has been deleted, Colfax and Roseville...

    Grand Central Sanderson Station

The Cut Bank connection was just a proposal that got fairly far along (the bus company already was running Great Falls <> Cut Bank). The cross-border bus connection at Coutts/Sweet Grass, replicating the CP/GN rail service, was the only one between Montana and Alberta.

    Grand Central Sanderson Station

When I was collaborating with a bus company on a Great Falls <> Cut Bank <> Banff Thruway bus proposal, more than one Amtrak employee Back East did not know about the seasonal Browning stop.

    Colorado planning

A first step on the Front Range announced. These are multi-purpose improvements in the suburban area to be overlapped by the RTD B-Line.. CDOT has been awarded a CRISI Grant for ~66 million dollars to construct the first passing siding for FRPR, install PTC on the first ten miles of track, and...

    Portland Union Station for sale

He mentioned the type of structure instead. The agency that should take on this project is the Port of Portland. I did a walk through with them in the mid-1970's and they kicked it around, but they concluded that there wasn't potential money in it.

    Question about the Coast Starlight

In the summer of 1966 SP10 was due in Portland at 12:30 a.m. The Pacific Greyhound bus connection from Train 9 was due to arrive in San Francisco (at 3rd Street!) at 12:20 a.m. Amazingly, when I rode it we arrived in Portland on time and I was able to run through Union Station to catch the...

Ground Transport in the Pacific Northwest

More problems on the DEN <> SLC <> BOI <> PDX bus route. When the Pioneer was discontinued in 1997 there were three through Greyhound Lines trips on this route. By the time that FlixBus took over, it was down to one trip. Various combinations were tried. Recently, as I reported here, it was...

    California Zephyr first time rider

The first Colorado ski resort is now open, but it's at Wolf Creek, not on the CZ. I was on the E-Line LRT this afternoon, and when we went over Broadway, the top of the Front Range was covered bright with new snow.

4K Cab View - Dallas DART Light Rail from the DFW Airport past Downtown to Park Lane

Interesting that they don't blow the standard grade crossing whistle signal.

    Greyhound sounding Chicago alarm

The last time I rode Greyhound on what was then the last through PDX > SLC > DEN bus: 1. The driver did a magnificent job of getting us through a snowstorm in the Blues. The passengers applauded when we made it through. 2015 - Breakfast at Baker City. 2. Around Baker, the heat failed...

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

And thanks to this very article, in September 1967 when I took my big trip "back East" from Portland to Chicago and St. Louis, I dropped off the North Coast Limited in Minneapolis and caught the Morning Zephyr to Chicago. In April 1970 I rode the Rheingold. Unfortunately, I never got to the...

Amtrak East Coast single level consist possibilities

Right. I was writing too fast. In the context of this thread, that makes the space per passenger even less. The MC-6 subfleet was used on US101 in California and was used in Western Canada. Were there other places where they were used? They weren't street-legal on the Interstates.

    Portland Union Station for sale

The attached talk is from Ottawa, October 1977, but it has some background on Oregon intermodal terminal issues from my time at ODOT.

Amtrak East Coast single level consist possibilities

One trick of the Amtrak Heritage fleet coaches is that they started out with the first two digits of the car number indicating how many seats the car had. On March 26, 1973, Train 14 at Salem had these cars behind the diner and observation lounge, all in Amtrak livery: 4432, 4865, 4536, 8380...

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

The SP&S had extra equipment in Portland, including heavyweights. As I've mentioned before in some other thread, I've seen Train 2 leaving Portland with heavyweight diner "Willamette" - complete with crystal flower vases - and the rest of the consist turned on the regular cycle. Presumably...

When Europe’s railroad dining cars were the height of luxury

One thing that people today may not realize is that European railways ran a lot of express trains without on-board food service. That made the Orient-Express even more impressive by comparison.
