This also explains why Train 5 came through Omaha. It was just there soon enough to get through before the closure.

    A Tale of Two Cities

Besides the 1970 Hoek<>Harwich round-trip that I've written about previously, in that same year a friend and I took the DFDS ferry overnight from Copenhagen to Aarhus. It seems to be gone now -- perhaps a victim of high-speed rail. Ditto with riding overnight from Hamburg to Copenhagen on the...

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024 H1

Well, this is interesting! Train 5 (24) shows as having made the regular route through Omaha. Eastbound, OMA is blocked off in the reservation system for Train 6 on Tuesday morning. And the reservation system shows that one can buy a ticket from Hastings to Creston. Good night.

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

Chattanooga and Atlanta situations are good examples of issues that implementation of most of the FRA LD trains will raise. If any of these routes are implemented, we may end up with southern versions of Midway, MN for some indefinite period.

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024 H1

It depends on exactly what segment is underwater. Usually, it's east of Omaha station, and if so it's straightforward to use the UP through Council Bluffs. As of this posting, Train 6 is picking up speed on its regular route out of the Denver metro area, so they're probably not doing anything...

Great photo! Thanks for the info. I was hoping that someone familiar with the area would contribute. Today's travelers aren't offered much. Buses stop in Wildwood, eight miles from Chattanooga. On the GL/Flix website tonight: Greyhound bus tickets to and from Chattanooga, TN This destination...

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

The study shows the tri-weeklies being advanced to the next study level as a given. I was wondering about Chattanooga. The remaining station building, the Southern station would require a back-up move. When I was in Chattanooga for a veterans' reunion I wondered where the Union Station had...

VIA Jasper, Prince George and Prince Rupert Service

I never saw them laid out as well back then. Also, VIA Rail had not been operating as a combined CN-CP network for very long, so the data available for the former bus executive hired to prepare the cutback plan wouldn't have been very solid.

    Attire on the train?

Here's my traveling attire in 1971. My German "uncle" is dressed for working on the farm. I was aware that the folks in their small town were all aware that I was from the big city, so I tried to dress the part. (Before I even met my German relatives for the first time, I was "interviewed" by...

    Bid Up questions and experiences

For years I haven't seen a single in lower level coach. Just extra space in front of the right-hand pairs of seats. The front seats on either side have some inconveniences. On the left side there is no table, nor is there anything to grab hold of when getting up. On the right side there is a...

    Attire on the train?

For me it kind of depends on the weather expected. The photo on the left shows my favorite jacket for traveling. It got me into an unexpected tense discussion in a Deutsche Bahn 1st Class compartment when the only other passenger recognized the cloth as coming from a factory in the part of...

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

Whew! This is a lot of reading, but it's worthwhile. One problem with the long time-frame for this is that circumstances will change. As we know, that can be a justification for starting over again, rather than getting things done.

BNSF hit with huge fine for exceeding agreed traffic limits

When we started working at ODOT on the Oregon Transportation Plan in 1975 we were reminded that tribal governments were sovereign entities. It shouldn't be news, but some "forget."

    Fatal Czech RegioJet Crash

It seems that this is falling into the classic implementation gap, like the NEC Philadelphia crash or the RI/Q crash in the 1950's. The old system was switched off, but the new system was not on yet. Here's an updated Google translation. Statement of the Railway Administration The method of...

Ground Transport in the Pacific Northwest

Amtrak, of course, shows Sold Out conspicuously. On Flix/Greyhound they show the Sold Out trips in grey with small red letters saying that the trip is sold out. Something that will make it easier on Flix from Seattle is that on the left hand side of the screen there's a button labeled "filter"...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

Also too early to tell, but the Fed's drag on the economy might be affecting the vacation travel market. Gas prices are supposed to go up at this time of year and are not.
