I just thought I'd mention Herman, which has plenty of parking. Several times I have parked at Herman and taken the train to Sedalia. Then biked several days back to Herman on the Katy Trail. No problem with the car.
That solves the mystery. I think the two engines made me think long distance and Silver Star, The 5 coaches and cafe matched my expectation and had me thinking dining car next. But it must have been baggage.
Is it double track at NIB? If so, there is the question of which track to stand on. My only suggestion is to stand on the station side and wave. At KEE (Kewawne, IL) this caused the engineer to stop short of the station and honk, signifying I as to cross over to the opposite track.
On Wednesday the 27th we were on enlarged and packed 92. We were stopped approaching the Petersburg station when a weird train passed us going the other way: 2 engines, 5 coaches, cafe car, and dining car. No sleepers.
Later we seemed to be stopped much longer than usual at Richmond, the next...
When Amtrak finally instituted roll on - roll off bike service at all stations on the Capital Limited in late September 2015, it used repurposed coach baggage cars with 7 or 8 bike racks. The two times I used it, there were 2 regular coaches and this coach-bike car.
It appears the new Capitol...
Santa Fe
~Cameron, IL-Los Angeles, CA 2,096 Miles
I presume this is the SW Chief. Didn't it once run on the Santa Fe all the way between Chicago (or somewhere near there) and LA?
My son and I once bicycled from the Moffat Tunnel east portal to Rollins Pass. It's true the pass was impassible to cars, but not to hikers. The road was so rough that I found it easier to bike up than down.
Room 15 is definitely the family room on the lower level. Regardless of whether you prefer upstairs or a roomette, I would consider being switched to a roomette a downgrade. Bucket for bucket, I'm sure the family room is more expensive that a roomette.
The interesting thing about Las Vegas, NM is that there are 3 town centers.
The first in chronological order is centered around a Santa Fe style plaza a few blocks west of the rail line, probably dating from Santa Fe Trail days. The second is near the train station and La Castaneda.
The third...
First of all its bike and pedestrian friendly, then there's Joe's Place for breakfast. The countryside around it is also bike friendly and contains a bunch of wineries. One of them has, or had, several vintage Pullman cars available for visiting.
The station is near downtown; but has no agent...
To clarify, the bus station couldn't have been Tampa. What used to be called St Petersburg/Clearwater (STP) was recently moved from a store front in a seen-better-days strip mall in Pinellas Park to a street, still in Pinellas Park, I believe. My ticket dropped Clearwater from the station name.
I use this service once or twice a year to and from Orlando and St. Pete/Clearwater. It's always been a good experience.
Most recently it was after connecting at Orlando from a 8 hour late southbound Silver Star. I'm glad that Amtrak notified me that STP had been moved to a new street corner...
