Travelling with a bike (how to get answers)

It wasn't an old crank, but one conductor on the Illinois Zephyr made us store our bikes in the overhead rack and remove the handlebars. When I pointed out to the conductor that the rules specifically prohibit folding bikes in the overhead rack, he replied that that only applies to folding...

Travelling with a bike (how to get answers)

Unless things have changed recently, the Missouri train situation is identical to Illinois. There are no bike racks. Bicycles are stored any old place there is room. It simplifies things if you can turn the handle bars sideways or even remove the pedals. You need a bike ticket and they sell...

Amenity kit on LSL and CL?

You do get a bottle of wine with your box, at least on the CL and for now.

Viewliner II Part 3: Bag/Dorm Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

They are already opening more transdorm space to passengers. I recently boarded the Capital Limited booked in room 2, car 3009. I was surprised to see I was in the transdorm because I thought those room numbers were 15 and above. Room 2 was located to the front of where barrier between revenue...

Viewliner II Part 3: Bag/Dorm Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

This was in between the last sleeper and the baggage car on 97(19). It sure looked like it was being used by Amtrak personnel. It seemed to be a strange train to employ it given that a lot of the people are supposed to be gone by Oct 1.

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Just exactly when does the changes to the SM come about. I was curious and checked prices before and after Oct 1. WAS to ORL, roomette, 2 persons, $ premium SM over SS: Sep 23 thru 30: $29, 49, 49, 49, 49, 49, 86, 69. Oct 1 thru 7: $49, 49, 49, 29, 29, 49, 29. It doesn't take any...

    Bike stuff

I'm planning a trip on the Silver Star, boarding in DC. Has anyone ever traveled in a a Viewliner sleeper with a folder? The only time I did it was on the LSL and I stored it in a coach luggage rack. Would an attendant in DC get an attack of bicycle derangement syndrome?

What am I missing, Eastbound on the CZ from Glenwood Springs?

I once biked from Winter Park to Glenwood Springs via Kremmling, Dillon, and Vail Pass. So I know what you are talking about. But what I want to know is the OP's route from Denver to Vail Pass. I think that would be much more difficult than Vail Pass going east or west.

    Fewer sleepers on California Zephyr?

"it's the portion south of Trinidad, CO and north of Albuquerque, NM, that has the most pressing need for PTC to be installed." I think this needs a qualifier. There isn't any freight traffic between Trinidad and Albuquerque; so that couldn't cause a need for PTC. There are a handful of NM...

Capitol Limited - Carry On Bicycle Service

I've used the CL RORO bike service several times, including right after it finally started. If I recall, I described it at that time as a no-brainer and the conductors were very accommodating. Just to clarify some of the posts, the car is a coach-baggage, i.e., instead of lower level seating...

Amtrak employees need an attitude adjustment

(responding to spinnaker. I can't seem to get the quote thing to work) The last two times I had a bike and tried to use the ML I was told to take it to the baggage check area where they would hold it for me. But the problem is you never know when to leave the lounge to retrieve it. The baggage...

Ottumwa, Osceola or Mt Pleasant long term parking.

Thirty sees about right. I'm not sure about an overflow lot because I've always found a space in the regular lot along side the station.

Ottumwa, Osceola or Mt Pleasant long term parking.

I've left my car many times at MTP, including up to a month several times, and never had a problem.

New Member Info Requested (re Santa Fe, NM)

I was there a couple of months ago and there was a very nice coffee shop/snack bar in the station. The coffee shop operators and volunteers appeared to be one in the same. When I asked the volunteer if he was an Amtrak subcontractor, he said he contracted with Santa Fe Southern Railway, the...

    Extended stop in TX

Actually if you try to book CHI-LAX on a day that 421 runs, you are presented with 6 options, some better than others: 1. 421 2. 3 3. 21 changing to 1 in San Antonio 4. 21 to 421 changing in Ft. Worth 5. 5 changing in Sacramento to 704 changing in Bakersfield to 5804 (bus) 6. 27 to 11 changing...

Should I use my free Lounge Pass in PHL?

If as you say you don't travel Amtrak a lot, I would use it. It probably has an expiration date. In my case it wouldn't be where, but under what the circumstances. I wouldn't waste a pass for a 1/2 hour wait in PHL no matter how nice the lounge, but save it for say a 5 hour wait in Chicago...

Illinois General Assembly Passes “Capital Bill”

From the Midwest High Speed Rail Association "Illinois has also committed $100 million for track upgrades to the CN-owned railroad that hosts trains between Chicago and Carbondale. This should address slow speeds and frequent delays on this line, which serves the University of Illinois at...

    Bike stuff

Has Ottumwa changed? I did a test booking on several different days from OTM to DEN; and the "add bike" section said "sold out" on each day. On one of these days I tried Galesburg to Denver; and it allowed me to book the bike. For those not familiar with the route OTM is in between GBB and...

Southwest Chief late a lot lately

I'm not sure what "both sides of the equation means"; but I may have experienced it recently in what I describe as man bites dog. We boarded #4 at Lamy on time and we left La Junta on time. Then somewhere before Lamar we came to a halt and the lights went out (but fortunately came back on...
