    NJ Transit fare holiday

My wife and I rode NJ Transit from Trenton to New York Penn Station and back on Saturday, Aug. 31, to visit her sister, not specifically to ride NJ Transit free, though that sounded attractive. The train we rode left Trenton around noon. By New Brunswick it was standing room only, and at...

    Philadelphia Amtrak to Villanova University

Actually, the regional rail and Norristown High Speed Line stations (both Villanova and Stadium) are right at the Villanova campus. The regional rail is the quicker and easier way to get there from 30th St.

Which US airlines do you recommend for domestic service?

Report from Honolulu: since I got up this morning, American Airlines has rescheduled our flight for today three times.

SEPTA Iconic Green and Cream Trolleys returning to service June 16, 2024

I saw one recently in the same spot from an NJ Transit train. I plan to wait for cooler weather before spending possibly a long time on a street corner waiting for a trolley. Depending on where I am when I begin my trip, I will probably walk up 63rd from Market to the no. 15 line or ride the...

Contingencies for any cancellations in a heavily multi-segmented trip?

Yes, there's a Traveler's Aid kiosk in 30th St. Station, Philadelphia. That's how I knew.

The problem with suburban bus service in the USA

In transit planning, it's sometimes defined as coverage vs. frequency: whether to serve more places or to serve fewer places but more often. A grid with a bus stop on every corner and buses every 10 minutes might have the most capacity but would require transfers for many trips. All system...

The problem with suburban bus service in the USA

I've experienced this problem many times on Septa, NJ Transit, Washington Metro buses, and more. Slow, circuitous bus routes are not attractive. They don't make me want to drive, but they make me want to walk instead, especially if the bus runs once an hour, or just forget the trip, and...

Washington DC Union Station facilities, convenience and experiences

VRE has never had a regular departure as late as 7 pm, to the best of my recollection. (There were a few rare baseball and fireworks specials.)

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion 2024 H2

Hazmat covers a lot. The big concern is toxic inhalation hazards. There are no short rail detours around Washington, DC, towns on the long detours don't want toxic inhalation hazards passing through, putting such hazmat on the highways might be even more risky, and personally I'm not sure a...

Contingencies for any cancellations in a heavily multi-segmented trip?

About a year ago, when Amtrak stranded us in Vermont at the time my mother died in New Jersey, I resolved to research alternative transportation home before future big Amtrak trips and find out whether there is a Traveler's Aid office at our destination.

Pennsylvanian (the train(s) and route) discussion

Amtrak did say that during the Keystone construction the Pennsylvanian would have extra capacity. I thought it would be more than one additional coach.

Contingencies for any cancellations in a heavily multi-segmented trip?

In summer of last year, I thought (too late) that we should get travel insurance for our Philly-Pittsfield-Syracuse-Burlington-Philly trip, and indeed the trip was badly disrupted, but I couldn't find insurance months after making the reservations

Which US airlines do you recommend for domestic service?

One tip when using American: on the website, you can sign up for relevant alerts. Last year American changed one of our departures from 8 am to 6 am and didn't tell us. Our travel agent got an alert a week before our departure and fought with the reservation system so we wouldn't have a...

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

I think it would be helpful to define "meltdown" more specifically in this context. I looked at a few definitions on the OneLook Dictionary website. Merriam-Webster is concise: "a rapid or disastrous decline or collapse," like a nuclear reactor melting down. Not just seriously messed up, but...

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

"In anticipation of purchasing a high dollar Amtrak trip in October I over paid my FNBO account last month. Their response was to freeze my credit card for 10 days, with no notice." I had a similar problem a few months ago with the Pentagon Federal Credit Union, which is usually excellent. I had...

Time Before "X" and Text Delayed Train Alerts

I used the Fredericksburg, Va., station hundreds of times per year riding both VRE and Amtrak beginning in 1996. For many years there was no Amtrak status information in the station. You could go down to street level and call Amtrak from a pay phone, but for years the only information you could...

    Printed-out seat checks

I mostly ride Keystones, regionals on the Northeast Corridor, and occasionally Empire trains. I've never noticed those printed seat checks.

Which advocacy approach would be most effective

As former chairman of the Virginia Assn. of Railway Patrons (merged with Virginians for High Speed Rail almost two years ago), I say join an existing group. Starting, building, and running a rail advocacy group is a lot of work. If you have people interested in and willing to work toward...

North East Corridor (NEC) speeds, new stations and state of repair

"not one inch of the overhead wiring between Washington, D.C., and New York’s Pennsylvania Station — zero percent — is in a state of good repair." Even the parts that have been upgraded with constant-tension catenary? Also, it addressed only the line between Washington and New York, not...

Rail tunnel between Spain and Morocco

Aside from World Cup traffic, is there really that much demand for travel between Spain and Morocco to make a tunnel worth it?
