North East Corridor (NEC) speeds, new stations and state of repair

Why so many catenary problems in this area lately? I've been riding the Northeast Corridor since about 1970, when the electric trains were mainly GG1's and MP54's. The catenary was probably the same as it had been for quite a few decades, and there were occasional problems, but I don't remember...

    Combining points and cash

I mentioned this to Kev Monteith of "Travels with Kev." This is what he said: "I looked more into the program, at the math, and compared it to buying points because that is where this program comes in handy. It saves that step. "From what I looked at, it depends on how many points you use...

SEPTA Iconic Green and Cream Trolleys returning to service June 16, 2024

Doesn't Girard Av. go through Kensington? That's a bad neighborhood with drugs and crime. I don't care what color the people are. "it would have been nice to keep the cranks just for looks": I'm a crank. People can look at me. Maybe I will improve the atmosphere on the trolley. ;-)

    Virginia

Fredericksburg: I lived in a neighboring county, Spotsylvania, for 35 years and spent much time in Fredericksburg. If you are interested in Civil War or colonial history, there's a lot within walking distance, such as the Fredericksburg battlefield and the Fredericksburg Museum, each about half...

    Washington DC Metro's new cars

The photos show both transverse and longitudinal seating. Probably they meant lie-flat seats. ;-)

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

There are three tracks in places between Washington and Fredericksburg but so much freight and passenger traffic in both directions that expresses often don't have a place to overtake locals or freights. I commuted on that line for about 20 years.

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

Maybe Chicago is in the middle somewhere but not labeled. ;-) From the map, it appears that you can take a circle trip from Chicago. :-)

    Hello I’m new here

Welcome. I don't have a car either, on purpose. Seven years ago I intentionally moved to a place (Alexandria, Va.), where I didn't need a car, and after I retired we moved to Drexel Hill, Pa., where we also don't need one. (Pennsylvania is cheaper than northern Virginia, and our neighborhood...

    Coach from Chicago to where?

Most of the Amtrak lines radiating from Chicago have daytime coach service. You can go to Milwaukee, Quincy, St. Louis, Carbondale, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Indianapolis, and places in between, and maybe some I've forgotten.

Pennsylvanian (the train(s) and route) discussion

"What if a passenger misses a stop, do they arrest him?" I'm sure the reference to involving the police was about pulling the emergency cord, not because the woman hadn't paid. When I was commuting on Virginia Railway Express, though, conductors would issue citations to passengers who boarded...

Additional Service from New York/Philadelphia to Pennsylvania

I read most of the report, and I didn't see anything about through service between Reading and New York, only separate Allentown-Reading and Allentown–New York services being proposed. Surely through service would attract more passengers. Reading might have its own service to New York via...

    Hello

Welcome, Ken. My first Amtrak trip was in 1972, so I'm a fellow fossil. :) Oregon Pioneer, Exeter, NH, is on the Downeaster route.

    Traveling in coach

Travels With Kev has "Amtrak Coach Class: A Guide for New Passengers" I guess you're on your way by now, but this may help with future trips or help others who come here looking for information

Getting to New York Penn Station

I don't think you need to go out and cross 8th Av. It's been a few months since I was in Penn Station, but I think there are elevators from the main level down to the Long Island level, and you can walk inside from there to Moynihan, with, as best as I can recall, no steps. From 6th Av. to 7th...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

You can't copyright names. (I worked in publishing for many years and dealt with copyrights and trademarks, along with other work.) You could trademark them, but to keep the trademark, you have to register and defend it. Many trademarks have been lost and become generic words (for example...

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

My wife doesn't look out the window much but strongly prefers facing forward. Even on short trolley rides, if we have to face backwards, she wants to change seats as soon as a forward-facing seat opens up. I prefer facing forward. When I commuted on VRE, however, I liked facing backwards because...

    Amtrak website/app issues

I called Guest Rewards and got the reservation within a few minutes. The friendly, helpful agent said I had two reservations not paid for. She canceled one, applied the voucher, and pointed out that the flex fare for train 42 was only $3 more than the saver fare, so we opted for the flex fare...

    Amtrak website/app issues

I will call Guest Rewards soon when I have plenty of time. I've generally gotten good help from them but sometimes with a long wait. And I got a fast reply from Amtrak: "We are currently experiencing technical difficulties with our site. We are aware of the problem and are currently working to...

    Amtrak website/app issues

I've been trying to make a reservation for a June round trip between Philly and Lancaster. Every time I get to the end and click Purchase, I get the moving train symbol, the word "Loading," and then it logs me out. I tried Firefox and Edge, both of which I have used numerous times to make online...
