WMTA question (DCA to Crystal City)

When I needed to go to the airport from Crystal City, I used to walk the trail partway until I was across the highway, then cut across an access road and a parking lot. I could walk from the VRE station to the airport terminal in about ten minutes. When VRE had a presentation at the Crystal...

New member out of Philadelphia area

Hi, Devo. I live in Drexel Hill and ride the trolley a lot, as well as the Wawa regional rail about once a week. I love trains too. :-)

More Greyhound cutbacks and comparison with airlines

Syracuse, NY, has Amtrak and intercity and local buses all in the same building.

Progress on service to Madison WI

"3 miles at 15 mph, plus another 3 miles at 15 mph, equals 20 minutes": my computer-like brain says that 6 miles at 15 mph takes 24 min. :-)

Why no elevated platform in Flagstaff?

The Amtrak Station Classifications and Features document (I can't find it online; mine is 10 years old and was included in the New York–Vermont Bi-State Intercity Passenger Rail Study) indicates that all stations should have a platform. It doesn't say whether this means a paved platform.

    NEC Meltdown 12/31/23

Information from the news: WVCB in Boston mentions statues of trains: "Amtrak said the latest information on the statues of trains …" If anybody sees the statues, please post pictures. ;-)

    Texas High Speed Rail

"40mph is high speed": in Virginia, when I was commuting on VRE, 25 was high speed. In Quantico (rail speed limit 55) and Manassas (25) VRE played recorded announcements that the adjacent track might have a high-speed train approaching. Although I commuted on VRE through 2017, I haven't ridden...

    Senior transit fares and cards

I do think that some agencies make it hard to get the reduced fares. When I was commuting on VRE, I wasn't yet a senior, but to get kids' fares, I had to take their birth certificates to a Commuter Store in Arlington (50 miles away, but I worked in the area) and register them for the program. To...

Model train store in Massachusetts says it's the largest in America

Cocojacoby, I think you're right about the store I visited being Eric Fuchs. I moved from Boston to Malden 44 years ago (and lived in Malden for only a few years), and although I recall the name Charles Ro, I don't recall the store. If I was there, my memory is lost in the mists of time...

Model train store in Massachusetts says it's the largest in America

If memory serves (and it's getting rustier all the time), when I lived in Boston I used to visit the Charles Ro store on Tremont St. in Boston. I later lived in Malden, so I hope I would remember if the store had been in Malden then (this was in the 70s and 80s; my younger coworkers in this...

    Miami South Dade Commuter Service

Is that the same area that has a busway? I was in that area 15 years ago, and maybe everything has changed, but I recall seeing a busway but no buses.

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

I too balance the checkbook, and I avoid autopayments for the most part because I need to know how much is in the checking account. Because of a problem with online payment to Bank of America I mentioned earlier in this thread (I think), I normally mail my FNBO payment shortly after getting the...

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

I am exactly what is wrong … I laughed when I read this. I assume that current service is optimized? Not by a long shot. I didn't say that, and I don't believe it. I just don't agree with the report's assessment of the direction commuter rail service needs to take. No, I didn't read the...

200MPH+ on the NEC: Is it practical?

In answer to the original question, no, I don't think it's practical to achieve 200 mph on the NEC. I don't agree with TouchdownTom9 about "staying above 100mph from Wash to Boston at all costs"; there are too many locations where those costs would be immense. I do agree with him and just about...

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

I read “Modernizing New York Commuter Rail: A Report by the Effective Transit Alliance” and had some thoughts about it. What I put together was too long for a comment on this site, so I uploaded it as a web page on my own website at...

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

Two lines I wish Amtrak would acquire: between Staples Mill Road Station and Richmond Main St. Station (about 7 mi.), and between Main St. Station and Centralia, Virginia (around 11 mi.). As long as I have been riding the Newport News trains (maybe 30 years), the trains have crept between...

    How to get seats together

Riding from NY Penn to Alexandria, Va., a few years ago (on the Crescent, I think), all 8 passengers for Alex. were placed together by the crew, I guess to make sure we all got off and to provide some seats together for passengers getting on at Alex. Once, more than 25 years ago, one of my sons...

    Japan’s railway manners

On the New York City subway, I've seen a long list of rules of behavior, including the pithy "Go before you go," along with commandments not to make loud noise, not to disturb other passengers, and not to set fires; "Oh," I said, commenting on these three, "I'm not supposed to have any fun." ;-)
