    Amtrak Coach discussion

I had a herniated disk in my back in 1996 and 1997 with much pain, but I was able to sleep OK in Amtrak seats both during the day and overnight. In fact, on one daytime trip my back was hurting when I boarded a train in Fredericksburg, Va., and it felt better when I got off in Boston after 9...

    Cardinal discussion

"there may be something going on with your App/Browser. Are you sure you are not looking for it on a day that it does not run?" Were you asking me? Concerning two years ago? (Your post was right after mine.) I mentioned that I knew which days the Cardinal runs. I've ridden it a few times, and I...

    Cardinal discussion

Cardinal not showing up in Amtrak booking: I had a similar problem a couple of years ago when the pandemic was ending and service was back on most routes. I knew which days the Cardinal was supposed to run, but it did not show up at all. I tried checking train status on the days it ran, but...

Comparison of Amtrak vs. other transport mode

When a taxi I'd called an hour earlier finally came and took us to the Newport News station, we got out and were the last people on board, and the train started moving right away. The next train was not till the following morning. We could have walked the three miles and gotten there earlier...

    Amtrak Coach discussion

I remember riding the Lake Shore from New York to Chicago; the train was full, and during the night, I dreamed that there was snow on the ground in Erie, Pennsylvania. It was actually June or July, but the car was a little cool even for me, and I was born in Elmira, NY, and like it cool or even...

    hello from Manila

Hello in Manila! My wife is from Mindanao, and we are getting ready for another trip to the Philippines (see the thread about longest flights). You probably know that Mindanao has no rails (unless I'm wrong), but on a trip last year I thought that Cagayan de Oro could use an elevated light rail...

    Amtrak Coach discussion

I rode Amtrak overnight in coach many times, and on three-day trips I always slept fine on the second night. Things changed for me once almost everybody had a cell phone. I'm a light sleeper, and in my experience, there was always somebody who would not shut up, even in the middle of the night...

    Modal differences in travel time

Just to clarify one thing about my comments: I don't commute in Pennsylvania. I retired before moving, and we live car-free, so I ride Septa a lot: trolleys, buses, regional rail, and subway. I commuted for 26 years in Virginia, sometimes into Washington.

    Modal differences in travel time

A perfect street has no pedestrian crossings: I know it was a hypothetical example, but I know the mindset. I've had drivers yell at me and swear at me for crossing a street when they wanted to run a red light or stop sign but I was in the way. I want to write something soon about how...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

"People waiting until the train is stopped before getting up to disembark allows for folks boarding to get on before the disembarkers get off the train, causing bottlenects in the vestibules." Based on my own experience, but not with Brightline (so maybe my comments are worth less than two...

Connecticut Inland Route and Albany - Boston Corridor (Compass Service)

Train one-way Boston-Springfield, bus the other way: I did exactly that on occasion when I lived in Mass. a long time ago (still within the Amtrak and Peter Pan era).

    Longest flight experiences

My longest one-way flights (four of them) were about 14 hrs. nonstop between Qatar and Dulles or Philadelphia, combined with flights of about 6 hrs. between Qatar and Manila, and under 2 hrs. Manila-Mindanao. My wife's native country is the Philippines, and last year's trip involved several...

    Washington DC Metro discussion

I lived in Virginia from 1991 to 2022 and rode Metro much, even before that, starting in 1977. Yes, the Metro system is physically attractive compared to New York's, but on one of my frequent trips on Septa I was thinking recently that the subway system is kind of pretty (blue and silver) and...

Boston - Montreal new rail alignment

I think I read that Massachusetts was interested in sponsoring a Boston-Springfield connection if the Vermonter ever becomes the Montrealer again. This would require little or no capital investment, I think (except trains), and the overnight schedule should be marketable even though the route is...

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

With the previous AGR bank, one time I paid with a cash transfer from my credit union a few days before payment was due, and when I checked it was labeled "pending." I called the bank to see what that meant, and I couldn't get an answer. So I was calling each day to see whether the payment had...

Short lived, temporary and seasonal stops

Franconia-Springfield in Virginia was a short-lived stop. It might have lasted a few years, with only the Night Owl (maybe not called that at the time) stopping there, as I recall).

Is commuter rail at its plateau or declining?

I ride the Septa Wawa line typically once a week, and there are a lot of riders going to work at the hospitals. A lot get off at Suburban Station too. One morning, only I and another passenger were left in the car after Suburban Station. Sometimes trains go out of service before their official...

Connecticut Inland Route and Albany - Boston Corridor (Compass Service)

I disagree that Inland Route improvements would benefit only travel within Massachusetts. I've ridden Inland Route trains and the Lake Shore now and then, but always for interstate travel, even when I lived in Boston. I live in Pennsylvania now, and I traveled to Pittsfield using the Lake Shore...

    Checked Baggage (luggage) discussion

About ten years ago I was meeting a daughter at the Staples Mill Road station. Her checked baggage didn't arrive with her, so I asked that it be sent to Alexandria, Va., because I normally used that station on workdays. Amtrak did, and I didn't have to drive to a station to get the bags; I took...

    Fares that don't make sense

In planning a trip we will take next week, I found that booking individual coach segments was sometimes cheaper than thru tickets with connections. And a couple of years ago we traveled in business class from New York City to Alexandria, Va., because it was cheaper than coach.
