    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Last March was our first trip on the Silver Meteor that had the new dining. I had no idea what to expect (like, are we heating our own microwave meals?). It was nice that someone was waiting on our table. The food was OK, some choices better than others. The dining car was a nice change from our...

    Travel insurance

We always buy it for out-of-country travel. Medical/hospital costs can royally screw you.

Insider.com and businessinsider.com stories about Amtrak trips

    1) The freight companies own most of the tracks. 2) Some have been better than others, but generally OK. 3) Old maybe, but I have not noticed "worn". New means no toilet in the roomettes...hate that. 4) Flex is fine, just serve it in a dining car. #s 3 and 4 may be the reasons we stop going to...

    Transatlantic Cruises

I already informed my wife that I'm not dragging formal wear (including black shoes) along for one night. I'll take dinner in the buffet that evening. Since I've been retired, it's Sperry Topsiders and no socks for me almost every day. I will bring a blue blazer and tie for the other evenings. I...

    Transatlantic Cruises

If you have ever gotten seasick, like I did once, you will know the value of a cabin where you can look at the horizon. We go on August 5, but the North Atlantic can be rough at any time of year. Our last cruise was 12 days on the Baltic Sea visiting 8 countries, which during that time, it was calm.

The demise of the inter urban trolley

I live in Media. This trolley goes from Media to West Philadelphia. If you want to go to center-city, you need to take the subway. Along the way, this trolley can drop you near a shopping mall, supermarkets, doctor offices, etc. Best of all, the ride is free for those over 65.

    Transatlantic Cruises

About $5,400. for 2 in a mid-priced "protected balcony" cabin (I assume this means a view without getting wet).:)

    Transatlantic Cruises

Yes, I can afford the trip, but I consider $5,400. for two people a reasonable price for a vacation for 6 days in a 5-star "hotel" with meals and entertainment included. We'll begin the trip by taking Amtrak to NYC. By the way, I wear a Timex watch and drive a '19 Subaru.

Getting to America... will we, won't we?

Meanwhile, back in the "states", my wife and I just booked a August trip to England on the Queen Mary 2. We will fly home. Am looking forward to a train trip to York. Have you done that? Your map is a bit hard to read. Do you live in L'Arverne? My wife and I did a Viking River Cruise on the...

    What should Amtrak change?

Ever use the subway in Paris? There is not one stop that gives you a clue to what major tourist spot is upstairs. But I admit Philadelphia is no better. They changed "Market East" (which is on East Market St.) to "Jefferson".

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

I booked our trip for Saturday 3/19 to Ft. Lauderdale on the 91 Star for 39,203 points (cash value $1,106.) for 2 roomettes. A single bedroom would have been $1,823. We have been assigned to car 9110. I was going to wait to leave on 3/30 to get the 97 Meteor, but they may not continue it 'til later.

    Bid Up questions and experiences

I see your point...however, my wife is 78, and I'm 80. Our "climbing" days are over. So far, we have had a sink and toilet on the "Silver" trips, but I realize that will change. I will say that I cannot imagine the two of us in one roomette after getting up in the morning...which is why we get...

The future of Amtrak and the long distance trains

Better yet, go INDIA style. Put hand grips and foot pads on the roof and sides of the rear car.

    European Overnight Trains

Graffiti was "invented" in ancient Rome as a way of speaking out. But I did not know that before traveling to 23 different countries over the years. It's fairly common.

    What should Amtrak change?

New York City does not let everyone down until the train is unloaded. So many people get off (and on) in NYC it would be madness to do otherwise. That's probably the reason for the station stop being 15 minutes. In Philadelphia, a line forms, but you are allowed to go down to the platform about...

    What should Amtrak change?

I do not get all of my Amtrak travel free, by a longshot. But it encourages me to pay for trips (and get points) to visit my daughter's family in Boston 3 times a year, and to take various trips to NYC rather than drive 2 hours. Also, I do not know if Amtrak gets a small cut of the credit card...

    Bid Up questions and experiences

As far as I'm concerned, the "bedroom" is a joke because you still have bunk beds. Plus, 2 roomettes can cost less than 1 bedroom.

    What should Amtrak change?

My Amtrak Master Card has gotten me over $2,000. in no cost trips since I got it 4 years ago. We are leaving again in a Silver sleeping car to Florida in March...free.

The future of Amtrak and the long distance trains

Maybe they are using one set of cars? We were set to leave New Orleans around 9 am. We finally left at 1 pm because we had to wait for the train returning from L.A., which was 3 hours late.

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

Well, at least for now, both trains will be running on March 30. Hopefully I'll be on the Meteor. The only trip I took on the Star had us 45 minutes late before the Tampa 2-hour run. That ended up putting us 1 hour and a half late in total.
