    Children's model trains

Got a wind-up Marx set from Santa in 1944, age 2, while my dad was overseas with WWII. Then a Lionel freight set for Christmas 1947. In 1953, my best friend showed me his 1947 American Flyer passenger set, and I would have traded sets with him for sure. I loved passenger cars, because I could...

    Hello from NJ!

Welcome! I was born in NYC, raised in Peapack-Gladstone, NJ, and now live in the Phila. suburbs. This gives me the worse accent you can dream of. We have taken overnight trains to Ft. Lauderdale (7 times), New Orleans, and Phoenix. I woke up a lot on the first trip.

    Assigned seats on the train?

If you are boarding the NE Regional, and want 2 seats together, at stops close to D.C. or Boston, board at a car all the way to the front. These stations board from the rear. If boarding in NYC, pay a red cap $5. to take you and your carry-on down to the platform before the mobs are allowed down.

Hurricane Ian 2022 (effects on Amtrak)

Too bad. Would have been nice to get new rail passengers from canceled flights.

    Discussion of train names

This 1941 movie showed the streamlined steam running, as well as interior shots. However, stupid plot. See it on Youtube.

Proposed legislation could affect credit card rewards in the US

I'm retired, and most would say that I'm very well off. However, I choose to drive a 4 year-old Subaru, and I wear a Casio watch. If credit card "rewards" are stopped, I will pay by my bank's debit card, check, cash or Paypal.

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

I hope 97 starts up again. It was a nightly function to watch it pass through Ashland VA around 9:15 pm (if running on-time).

    Discussion of train names

Speaking of the Broadway Limited. Because NYC was the first or last stop, the news media took the original train name "Broad Way Limited", and kept calling it "Broadway". In doing that, people thought the train was named after the famous street in NYC. In fact, the PRR named it because 4 tracks...

    Discussion of train names

Name-wise, the Silver Star/Meteor are perfect. They have the image of speed, and hence, being on-time (joke). The Crescent is a type of roll, but I don't remember them being served on our trip to NO.

Connecting from Amtrak to Center City Philadelphia at 30th Street Station

Jefferson station used to be called Market East, because it is located on Market street east of city hall. Now it's called Jefferson so you have no idea where it is located. The official name of 30th Street Station is now the William H Gray Station. Although I've lived here since 1960, I have no...

    USA Rail strike?

My wife and daughter were in London when the rail strike started. They were lucky to get to the airport for their flight home, since many non-rail workers (like taxi and bus drivers) get to work by rail.

Commuter rail to an Amtrak station

True, but are they "shared" stations? What is the difference between Brightline and Tri-Rail?

Commuter rail to an Amtrak station

In our Philadelphia local news was the recent addition of track about 5 miles long to a new station offering a 600 car parking garage, as well as a raised station platforms. Most of the stations along our Media line have parking lots way too small for the number of commuters wanting to use them...

Tips for sleeping well on Amtrak

After a few trips in a roomette, I got used to it. Having my hearing aids out, helps. I sleep on my left side, so I put a pillow between my back and the side... which helps when taking curves at 70+mph.
