Airport delays, lost luggage, & flight cancellations (2022)

I've had far more delays (late arrivals) by train than flying. But here is a good "delay" story. In Dec. 2019 we were going to Brazil. Plane backs out of gate in Philadelphia, and sits for 10 minutes. Red warning light in cockpit. Plane goes back in, and passengers and luggage are transferred to...

    Amtrak delays

The 2 Silver Stars passed each other last evening, just north of Ashland, VA. Southbound 91 was 1+ hour late, and northbound 92 was 5+ hours late.

    Short transfer

NE Corridor trains are usually on-time. The Silver Star often leaves DC late. They switch from electric to diesel engines there, so no "fudging" a late arrival.

    Price of New Vehicles

I bought a new '19 Subaru Outback Premium on 8/25/18 for $29,000. The very same (except for the color) used '19 was for sale by my Subaru dealer for $26,500. a few months ago. It even had 6,000 more miles than mine. They did have 2 top-of-the-line new '22 ones in stock for $42,800. but none lower.

Tips for sleeping well on Amtrak

The first time is tough. Live with it. IMO opinion, nothing wrong with Amtrak's pillows or mattress.

How much do departure and arrival times figure in your Amtrak trip planning?

For every long distance trip, I tell the person meeting us, "I'll let you know how late we're running".

    Tipping on Amtrak

I tip $20. per roomette (2) per night. I want to eat in the dining car, where I tip $5. per meal. If I HAVE to eat in my roomette, I do not tip for the meal. On 3 trips, I found the service "above and beyond", and I handed over a extra $20..

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

My prediction...Silver Meteor is history. 5 coaches and 5 sleepers, along with a cafe car, "dining" car, and baggage car, once a day each way, has been working just fine with Amtrak's bottom line.

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

I have the card. I'll chime in when I receive a communication.

Do any northeast regional trains from DC to NYP start in DC?

The real question may be "where do a lot of people get OFF?" I would guess many get off in DC. I know, when I go to Boston, a good 70% get off at NYP.

    Motivation for traveling by train?

I tell people that our Florida vacation starts as soon as we turn our luggage over to a Redcap. A vacation by air does not start until you find your luggage in the "arrivals" room. However, to be honest, we always fly home.

    Travel insurance

We buy it whenever we leave the US. The medical and hospital bills can be staggering, and your regular policy, most likely, will not cover them.

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

    Good, I'll switch.

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

So was I, for this past April. Then they changed their mind, and now it's Sept. I wish you well...but be prepared.

    Tipping on Amtrak

I leave $20. for each of our 2 roomettes. I do it after the bed is made that first night.

    Favorite Sleeper car room?

Usually it's not a car's room #, but how far you are from the dining car. Car #5 is a long walk on a bouncing train.

Niece will start rail commuting, need gift ideas for her

An excellent book I've owned is "On the 8:02, an informal history of commuting by rail in America".
