Questions regarding Southwest Chief and Sunset Limited

On the subject of the Sunset Limited...we had to get off at small station in Maricopa, AZ go get to Tempe/Phoenix. Because the 9:30 train was 3 hours late ...no taxies, no bus (left at 9;30), and no one answering a Uber call. So here we are at 12:30 am, screwed. Lucky for us, a group of 4 had...

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

Meanwhile...the Star is arriving at Miami 3 hours and 20 minutes late tonight. Things started going down hill at stop #1, Newark, 35 minutes late.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

The "microwave" era started 3 months before the "Covid" era. Prior to that, coach passengers were welcome to use the dining car and pay for the meal. The problem was, I never, in 5 trips, saw anyone enter via the coach door (kitchen end). But Amtrak still had to guess meals based on possible...

Who in the world are you?

Yes, South-East PA certainly is. For the train lover, Strasburg (one hour drive) has the steam powered tourist railroad, the huge indoor layout of the Choo Choo barn, the PRR Railroad Museum, and the TCA toy train museum. York (2 hour drive) is home to the largest toy train meet in the world...

Crescent #20 Washington, DC to NYC Penn Station - 2+ hour delays?

Recent? The Crescent is USUALLY 2 hours late (that was a 30 day average I compiled). From D.C. to NYC, always take the NE Regional (IMO, the Acela is not worth the double price).

Boston to Florida - Connection Question

I agree that getting 91 (Star) in NYC is the best bet. At least you know what time the trip to Florida starts. Getting to D.C. in time can be iffy.

    What should Amtrak change?

Overall, I think Amtrak is doing fine with what they have. I rode Brightline when it first started running between West Palm and Lauderdale. The 45 minute trip took almost 2 hours to crawl passed the many in-town road crossings. Two people plus a few cars had previously been hit. Now, as far as...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I think the Microwave food is OK. Next trip I'll order beef for BOTH lunch and supper. What is the alternative...flying? 😄 Taking a bus?😄 Suggest you bring a picnic basket from home...or stay home.

Possible trip to New Orleans in July

When we went, the Crescent was 1 1/2 hour late (no big news here). We got a cab right away, while 8 people waited for their Ubers. 😄 But this was 3 years ago.

Who in the world are you?

Greetings. I'm a train nut that lives in the Philadelphia suburbs. I love playing with Lionel and American Flyer "toy" trains as well as riding on real ones. At 80, I'm old enough to remember watching steam engines pulling passenger express trains at 70+ mph on the Long Island RR. I also...

    Auto Train service expansion?

Even though I live close enough, the Auto Train is not in my future. Although the trip to get on it is less than 3 hours, driving in the D.C. area can be a nightmare. Then, once there, it's a 4 hour drive to Ft. Lauderdale. Here is how we go: We walk 10 minutes to our local station. Arrive...

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

I tip $20. for each roomette, so $40. total. One trip we had to get off at West Palm Beach due to a accident up the line. Our room attendant got off to help us find our Uber driver (the dope showed up with his son in the front seat). Gave him an extra $20.

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

I found this group when searching to see what happened to the Meteor (97). We take it from Philadelphia to Ft. Lauderdale (and fly home) every March. I have this ritual of watching 97 go through Ashland, VA most evenings at 9:15 pm (if it's on time). I wonder why Amtrak had not gone back to the...

Boarding Acela at a station later than the one ticketed

Last Fall, to take advantage of a Phila to Boston Acela 40% off promotion, we booked Boston but got off and on at the Rt. 28 station (about 10 minutes away). Not sure if this addresses your question.
