    4 European countries in 7 days ~ 11 trains & 2 ferries

Just as a small correction, but it seems you took a picture of the 'other' steam train in Jenbach, the Zillertalbahn. Different type of gauge (760mm Zillertalbahn, 1.000mm Achenseebahn and 1435mm ÖBB gauges available in Jenbach) and some other steam locomotive details.

PSR: What is it? Why is it bad? What does it mean for the future?

To add to the above: in the Netherlands, where we do railroad with a precise schedule, bridge openings on the passenger rail lines are scheduled, too. All according to the widely known '6P theory of logistics': "Proper Planning Prevents *iss Poor Performance".

Ferries, Ferries, and still more Ferries

Billy Bishop Toronto Airport Ferry. A bit more than 120 metres distance and 90 seconds sailing time: I walked back trough the tunnel...

Ferries, Ferries, and still more Ferries

Vancouver SeaBus ferry between North Vancouver and Vancouver: And, well, seize doesn't matter, AquaBus to the left and a FalseCreekFerries floating bathtub to the right: Google showed it to be the busiest time of the day; I was the only passenger on the bathtub. A better view:

    Pre-trip Covid 19 check question.

Just as a correlated datapoint: I flew from Amsterdam to Vancouver on Saturday, not one sneeze, cough, sniffing whatsoever. Normally there's always 'airway-noice' in the cabin. Now if that's all because we are all staying at home if feeling a bit down the weather or we're just not getting all...

The Canadian's Dome are now Open!

Covid willing (I'm fully vaccinated, but there's still a "opportunity" in getting Covid anyway...) I'll be able to take the Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto in October. It will be interesting to compare Amtrak and VIA-Rail. That dome-car... 🙂

When traveling in a bedroom, do you have your SCA fold up the bed each morning?

I do it myself, top bunk, double bedding. 😴

    Locomotive Direction

Haha, yeah, but if your front locomotive gets defected (windshield cracked by treebranche, truck hits front signal light, trainradio defect, etc.) and your second engine is facing forward, too, you could likely just switch their position in the train. Either way, better hope nothing happens...

    Number of Engines on CZ

I don't know the GEs, but an EMD Class66 will not start (easily, may need 'vitamine E'(ther)) if beneath a certain temperature. In Europe we use electric ground power to pre-heat engines, or diesel cooling water heaters. And I guess in the USA diesel was cheaper, and there used to be less care...

    Railway Gauge

Just a picture in our shop of a wheel on a straight rail. Gives you an idea about the clearance between the parts...

    Railroad crossing accidents

We were just thinking to do that to a crossing near one of our workshops! It may look more familiar (as a place where you are likely to get ticketed...?) Just hoping car drivers won't turn right after a rolling stop too often. ;)

    Railroad crossing accidents

    1. When I'm driving a train, I know any error or misjudgement I make can result in death, wounded people, damages and/or an investigation. And I could loose my permit. And I don't want any of the above. 2. Before starting my education I was tested and certificated medically and psycologically...

    Railroad crossing accidents

I'm not sure there's a problem with the railroad side of the crossing that needs fixing. As a car driver I'd stop, look and listen. After I'm sure no train is dangerously close, I'd cross the tracks. If that doesn't work, a technical warning system for car drivers paid by the owner or closing...

    Railroad crossing accidents

No. In the Netherlands and Germany I don't need to make noise to savely pass a rail/road crossing. Many Americans came from the Netherlands and Germany. I've never seen evidence that evolution made Americans relatively visually or intellectually impaired. It can and needs to be solved at the...

    Track Condition

TC Rail on YouTube has some interesting videos. This one's about track non-condition: Speed bumbs start after exiting the yard.

They felled some trees and filled a ditch to move the cranes in position. Dutch link to local news site

Seat assignments (Acela pilot Feb 2018)

If you wanted to take a train from Germany Cologne to Frankfurt half an hour from taking the screenshot below, you can still reserve a seat in a ICE-train. This train started in Bruxelles.

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

I hadn't read yet that one should be afraid of getting the virus via fecal matter. But IF a person can excrete active virus via fecal matter et cetera, it poses the question, whether going commando after eating beans is wise. 😉

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

I'm not sure I can follow how all this filter stuff really impacts the reduction of the small change of getting this virus in your room on the train. I haven't read anything about the virus being transmitted via long airducts, only about droplets carrying the virus a few feet max, or transfer...

Auto train derailment south of Deland 3/26

Well, I would think, that you're hauling mostly air, unloaded or loaded, with auto racks. Automobiles are not as compact as, for example, iron ore. So only mixing loaded and unloaded auto racks (as in the Auto Train) wouldn't make the same difference as mixing loaded/empty auto racks with high...
