    Roundtrip Rotterdam-Los Angeles-Chicago

Well, then, South West Chief it is! All loungers were offered Red Cap Service, but I declined and walked to the train. It was shoved into the station. The locomotives were numbers 50 and 127, followed by baggage, transdorm, two sleepers with the bedroom sides pointing to each other, diner...

    Roundtrip Rotterdam-Los Angeles-Chicago

After seven hours of interrupted sleeping (which I consider to be acceptable for nine hours time difference / night shift) I had breakfast in the hotel. The hotel shuttle van dropped me of at terminal 1. The FlyAway busses run every half an hour, may depart a bit early, and skip terminals if...

    Roundtrip Rotterdam-Los Angeles-Chicago

Updates! Flight from Brussels to London went well, no delays. I found myself a quiet place to relax with some music (Rammstein, NineInchNails, Madrugada, Underworld). The 'puddle jumper' from London to Los Angeles however was about an hour delayed at departure and arrived with about 45 minutes...

    Roundtrip Rotterdam-Los Angeles-Chicago

Hi there! I liked the concept of the trip report from iliketrains. I'll try to update this one every time I've got WiFi. I just departed from Holland. I'll leave with the South West Chief from Los Angeles. And back from Chicago with the Texas Eagle. Oh, and I type this on a smartphone. Below a...

Southwest Chief: Chicago to Los Angeles - October 2017

Great report! Thanks! "The path isn't marked, and you have to walk out a door, across a courtyard, through an unmarked door, down two flights of stairs, over the river, and through the woods." [emoji23]

Hotels at Amtrak connection points nationwide

I understand you worries. I use Google Earth to search for hotels near stations. The internet is used to find and compare prices and reviews. Prices for the same hotel rooms vary very often, so a list with cheap prices of close-by hotels may not be too usefull. In December I change from...

"More than one in four Amtrak trains are late" says the Business Traveller

I can imagine that the train was delayed by track work. On freight-only/-mostly lines track work is mostly done in daylight. But on passanger-only/mostly lines track work is pushed towards nights, because far less trafick has to pass.

Amtrak #6(30) Has Union Pacific Leader

That's interesting! So a lot is standardized between cabines from different locomotive types and suppliers? Here in Europa we have to be educated and examined on every locomotivetype we use. And take re-examinations at least once every three years. (Not that I need that for all locomotives...

    WSJ article about Richard Anderson

I don't know what PTC shows, but ETCS shows enough. So I that I don't see, what a tablet would add. If PTC doesn't show enough, fix PTC?

    Austin to California and back

Hmmm, the train took a right turn after Albuquerque. And I didn't see any rabbit holes... [emoji6] (Had to google (or yahoo!) that one!)

    Austin to California and back

Thanks, v v! I saw a small dust bowl in the distance. My phone/agenda/entertainment center/distractor/camera couldn't make it sharper, though, bummer. And I wanted to clear the crossing, before the ding-ding-ding would start and the driver and conductor would get nervous! [emoji6]

Ferries, Ferries, and still more Ferries

Well, I like to walk. Especially when long sitting sessions in planes and trains are involved. [emoji6]

    Austin to California and back

As it happened British Airways had a good (cheap) fare to Austin in September... Below again mostly pictures, with just a few comments. Woke up, walked to the subway, changed to the InterCityDefectDirect to Schiphol. Flight to London was in a 767, the plane was rather empty. In London T5 was...

Trip from Rotterdam to South Bend and further

Ed, bookstores are always a reason to visit a city!  :) And I guess, I just traveled at quiet times; Metro-North end of the morning and South Shore near South Bend was rather empty, too.

Trip from Rotterdam to South Bend and further

Last winter I took a short trip to the US. 25+11 paid vacation days and no car can give someone that freedom. Wife and children will probably be able to take care of themselves.  On January 16th 2018 I started with the metro (subway) to Rotterdam Centraal. In Rotterdam Centraal I changed...
