    Amtrak Fare Comparisons

Thanks for doing this. I assume you used Metrolink weekday fares?

Things to Do in downtown LA

Churros are the dessert after you have a carne asada torta from either the Anna Maria's stall or the Tacos de Tomas stall. Mmmmm.... carne asada! There's also a good modern Thai fusion lunch place at the top of Angels Flight: Starry Kitchen. The menu rotates regularly, so get whatever looks...

    new Surfliner express

Actually 17 minutes, but what's 5 minutes to Amtrak? ^_^

    new Surfliner express

It is possible they're holding off until closer to the 15th. I hope that's what it is.

    new Surfliner express

Ignoring your hyperbole, I would expect something marketing-related like a press release on either the Amtrak site and/or the Amtrak California site, or a banner in rotation on one of the sites, or that one of the press agencies (eg, PR Newswire) would have been given notice so that Google could...

    new Surfliner express

Train 563 is an early-morning daily train from San Diego to LAUS. Beginning Feb 15, it runs weekends-only. In its place on weekdays is a new train, 563, that skips five stations: Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, Santa Ana, Orange and Fullerton. Both 565 and 563 depart at 7:05, but whereas 565 arrives...

    Do Highways Pay for Themselves?

And that's on the high side. How about roads that pay for only about a fifth of their cost?

    Northbound Starlight questions ...

It's a separate bar facility that Amtrak uses for a lounge, so that probably doesn't have much effect on Traxx's sit-down lunch business.

    Los Angeles Union Station Sold

I would rather Metro have bought it, just for local control.

Coast Starlight out of L.A. now at 12:15pm??

Southbound, an 11:00 arrival is going to wreak havoc with the connecting Surfliner that leaves LAUS at 10:10. It's that last departure of the night.

Opinions on Los Angeles Union Station (LAX)?

Whoever said that was not being rational. I'm at LAUS on a fairly regular basis for both Amtrak and Metro Rail reasons, and I can tell you the station has beautiful architecture, is well-maintained, has two (count 'em: two) landscaped courtyards, and a growing number of food options. It is a...

Amtrak AutoTrain Sleeper Fares Exploding for 2011

I remember discussion some time ago about travel agents blocking massive quantities of bedrooms for later sale, pushing remaining inventory into higher buckets. As travel time approaches, the agents dump their unsold inventory at $0 cost. I wonder if some of that is going on here?

WI & OH Rail Projects Killed by US DOT

Speaking as a CA resident, I'm more than happy to accept any monies other states don't want. Someone has to lead the way into the 21st century so it may as well be us. (Actually, we're entering the latter part of the 20th century, but that's a quibble.) I read the extra money will be used to...

Engine numbers photoshopped out of "Amtrak America"

One reason people might confuse the approach of Engine 94 for route 94: City busses! They typically have a head sign that includes the route number in big, bold digits. I suspect people are just transferring that background knowledge to the approaching train.

    Metrolink Rotem on Display

Pity. We should get together again.

    Metrolink Rotem on Display

I checked out the link you posted. Don't know what that big ribbon will do for forward visibility, but it is festive! Patrick, you coming to LAUS or staying close at Moorpark?

    Metrolink Rotem on Display

I read today that Metrolink is having a 2-week tour to debut its new Rotem coaches and cabs. December 6th they'll be on display at LAUS. More information here.

    Coast Starlight this Morning

You'll enjoy it, just for the exclusivity and the nostalgia factors. And the domes: don't forget about the domes. Even on a short-haul trip like L.A. to San Diego, being in a dome and able to look forward and back made for a very different experience.

    Coast Starlight this Morning

Oh, the ride seemed comparable to a Superliner.
