    P32AC-DM 703

Amfleet- I've been watching the Southwest Chief for about a year and a half now, and last summer it had 4 locomotives on a regular basis. It went as high as 5 a couple of times. As the express business winds down it has gone down to just 3 units. Last night it still had three units even though...

Superliner ex. Coach Smokers Being Renumbered

Yeah, I'm wondering if the motive to move back to Coach/Baggage configurations comes from the aging fleet of baggage cars that will need to be retired soon. With no hopes of ordering new equipment any time soon, I think they're going to need all the Coach Baggage cars they can get to cover the...

    Beech Grove

Hey! They need to get to work on that Surfliner so we can get it back in service out here. This corridor is getting killed without more equipment. Last night at Fullerton they were running Superliner 1 coaches in one of the trains. (Aside from the usual 4 Superliner Coach Bagage cars that have...

    Sold Out Trains

The Coast Starlight is a frequent sell out between Oakland and Los Angeles. -Firebert

    If you could add routes....

Either way, let's get some of those Talgo XXI Lakeliners built and pair them up with some P42s and run some 110+MPH trains. I nominate Los Angeles-Las Vegas and Chicago - Minneapolis to be the first two corridors with the new equipment. As more sets are delivered the routes can expand to San...

    New Sleepers Being Planned!

I finally had a chance to look at the diagram for the sleeper that was posted. It looks like quite a classy design, but with the added length of each compartment there there would be 1 or 2 fewer compartemnts in either side of the car. Thet could mean both lower revenues for Amtrak as well as...

Live Chat every Sunday 7PM ET

I haven't heard any Safari update rumors. The next major update will be when Tiger hits store shelves. It's been a good browser for me since it came out. I did have some java issues with it in the beginning but they've all been hammered out. Safari is actually based on the KHTML engine found in...

    Favorites?

So far my best has been going through the Colorado Rockies on the California Zephyr. That was some of the most amazing scenery I've ever seen between the mountains and seeing the Denver city lights just after exiting Moffat tunnel. I can't wait to do it again. -Firebert

Live Chat every Sunday 7PM ET

That's odd. It worked for me and I think I'm using the most bug-ridded version of IE that Microsoft has ever made. I can't wait for Sept. 26 when I can try out the chat at home using Safari. I have a feeling it will work much better at home than at work. -Firebert

    New Sleepers Being Planned!

On a similar note, I read once some years ago that there was a prototype Viewliner version of a sightseer lounge that had an all glass ceiling. Hopefully they'll continue with that design when working on new lounges too. For the new sleepers, get the toilets out of the bedrooms. Yuck! I don't...

    Interview on Wednesday

Yeah, those pretest questions are nothing. I took those a little over a year ago. I choked on both interviews though and never got the job. What's weird is that Oakland and San Diego both interviewed me for the Asst. Conductor position, but Los Angeles wouldn't saying I wasn't qualified for the...

    NOW ARRIVING: The New Amtrak.com

Amtrak's site is okay, but could be a lot better. I really like sites that have the tabbed navigation across the top were great. Hopefully they will add that to their site. Also I'd like to see that all blue background go. I like having a plain white background because it looks so simple and...

    Sunset Restructuring...Why?

I've heard Gunn say on TV that it's not a problem between Amtrak and the UP's operations people. It's issues with management. I think they're trying to force too much traffic over the network and that's what's causing it to choke up. The UP didn't dig itself into this hole in a day, so don't...

Sounds like great fun! I'm jealous! I expect to see a full report here when you get back. -Firebert

    Sunset Restructuring...Why?

I think the idea behind the restructuring is that if you lay over the trainset in New Orleans for a day in either direction, it's like resetting the delay back to zero. That way neither the UP nor the CSX can claim "out of slot" treatment for the delays. Why Amtrak hasn't started a massive PR...

    6 Amtrak P40's (Dash8-40pbh) for sale

Kawasaki filed a lawsuit against Metrolink when they tried to purchase new equipment by utilizing options for more cars that were on the Sounder contract. They demanded that bidding be open to all interested parties, and the move worked because they walked away with the contract. They won...

    6 Amtrak P40's (Dash8-40pbh) for sale

The advertisement showed a build date of 1993. The P32-8 (Pepsi Cans) were built in 1991. I'd be willing to bet that Los Angeles Metrolink is taking a long hard look at the units for sale to use while they figure out their own motive mower issues. It sounds like their F40 rebuild project is...

Will the cardinal become daily with 3R/Palm cuts?

I would place this one in the highly unlikely category. Didn't they cut the Cardinal back to 3 days a week originally because it was unable to have enough passengers to support a daily schedule? Maybe if the train is doing well we can see them add a day of the week to the schedule. Even then...

    If you could add routes....

I say we go for making Salt Lake City a major Amtrak hub and offer a revived Desert Wind to LA, revived Pioneer operating SEA-SLC only, and a new day train linking SLC to Denver via Wyoming. Also we should see about starting the Ft. Wort to Denver train as well. That is going to be one major...
