    Chicago Union Station discussion

Chicago attendants have given me a hard time about my status when entering that Lounge. I've had to repeatedly remind them that Amtrack status also grants access. I typically point to their own placard in the Louge entrance that says this, which is just feet away from their desk. Multiple...

Amtrak wins takeover of Washington Union Station

Ah, a mall. I'd always wondered what the upper levels of the station had been. The building looked to me like the original was the facade that we see from Columbus Circle. And behind was a 2 level add-on (above ground). And there's those restaurants on the 2nd floor that overlook the...

    Winter Storm 2024 cancellations

Update - they just cancelled train #s 7/27 westbound for Jan 15th. Got the notice. So total is 3 days cancelled this week? I may have missed a day.

    Winter Storm 2024 cancellations

I don't use social media. I got a text on my phone immediately when the Empire Builder was cancelled. And I got a notification from the Amtrak app a few minutes later. But I'm booked on the train, and setup notifications for everything when booking anything: plane, train, ship, whatever...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Thanks for sharing. Not all of us trust Google. I won't hold my breath that the Wisconsin DOT will regularly update the official site because I live in Wisconsin :) The Wisconsin Association of Railroad Passengers has been regularly updating on the line as well. Its site is at: Wisconsin...

OK, where is the official site?

The official website has been quiet. Last update was in May. https://www.greatriverrail.org/blog/categories/news-release

    Empire Builder #8 (23) Derailment

Sad to hear this. It sounds like other NTSB accidents that killed people. There's often signs that NTSB investigators find that could have been spotted but weren't seen (like the camera footage) or weren't quickly and accurately acted on (red-tape).

    Booking online on Amtrak website

OK, thanks for explaining the blocked inventory. I wasn't aware of it. I'll retry with One-way to see if I can get around it.

Rail for Less: a fare checking site

1st, thank you for taking to chat with us -- your users! :D I used your website to find a whole month's worth of searching and it found when prices are higher. So I'd say this is working. In this age of instant gratification, many folks just give up waiting and think they can do it quicker...

    Booking online on Amtrak website

How can I do mixed service bookings? I want to book a roomette during nighttime and coach during daytime, while remaining on the same train. I tried doing Multi-City on amtrak.com but it won't find all the seats even though seats exist when I search as One-way. Do I have to do multiple...

    Refreshed Superliners in service

That is a beautiful diner! Hoping more Superliner long hauls get this refurb.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

As a comparison on bedrooms being way too expensive, I checked how much lie-flat seats cost for a flight. United's website say that for 2 people to fly wintery January, flexible days, no holidays, from Newark to LA, roundtrip, on one of United's Dreamliners costs over $3,400. Google says I...

    Bid Up questions and experiences

Ok, sounds like a good plan. I'll wait a bit longer and check on the price dropping and use my coupon then. Our friends took the Empire in winter and said their train was empty but they went coach. So I could still risk the BidUp ... I'm wished Amtrak would allow BidUp on trips booked with...

    Bid Up questions and experiences

Would doing BidUp on Empire in *winter* be risky? I've had mixed success doing BidUp on the Capitol for myself but this time my partner is coming with and wants a Roomette. My status has enough points to get us to Montanna on points in a Roomette but not enough for the return trip. My...

Chicago - St. Louis Lincoln Corridor to begin higher speed running

Thanks for sharing this site because it can show the map in dark mode / high contrast. I know there's lots of tracker sites but the older my eyes get, the brighter those websites appear and its harder to read them.

Chicago - St. Louis Lincoln Corridor to begin higher speed running

Yup. The Eagle / Lincoln often zip past traffic on the rural stretches of I-55. That is free advertising for Amtrak for anyone driving. Midwest Corn Country is boring to drive through. I've driven it but it's not fun. There's nothing to see. It's much more fun to sit back, pop and cold...

    Electric and Hybrid road vehicles

Yup, I also did this. 8kw ground mounted solar. I didn't include the offset from net metered because ... ... most folks cannot afford this. Most folks will remain grid connected and constrained by electric bills. Self-installed solar is a large CapEx bill for homeowners. Mine was about...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

As an American, I take exception to that comment! ;) Another point is cleanliness. German & Swiss trains were spotless when I lived in Germany. American trains (Amtrak, Metra in Chicago, etc.) look & start to smell like a squatters backyard ... train bathrooms look like a child played with...

    Electric and Hybrid road vehicles

Yea, some early Gen models of EV/PHEV can be had for cheap. I bought a Gen2 Volt years ago for less than any decent sedan. Had 0 issues with it. Sold it to a friend when I needed to upgrade to a truck (went with a diesel truck, so I'm a tree hugger?! Maybe not so much). Nay-sayers told me...
