First time Zephyr + Starlight, Surfliner, Ventures, Metra, and United

Cal, Thank you so much for a great trip report. (We were amazed at all the minute details you provided. It was like we were there and experiencing the trip, too.) Reading it was a perfect way to start off the day! Eric & Pat

    Amtrak bustitution discussion

We were aware of that proposed plan and are glad that it was never instituted. We were referring to what appears to be no provisions for coming up with, on short notice, bus bridges for those stations located between Albuquerque and Kansas City. In the case of the Scout group that was recently...

    Pets on Long Distance Trains

On our 2023 trip on Southwest Chief No. 3, while we were stopped in Raton, we saw a woman walking a little dog and wondered if she was a passenger. We later saw her walking through our sleeper, carrying the dog and perhaps heading towards the dining car. It was too small to be a “service animal”...

    Amtrak bustitution discussion

The justification for keeping the Southwest Chief running between Albuquerque and Kansas City is that it fulfills a critical long-distance transportation need for the people living in between those two cities. In a different thread, a Scout leader related the problems encountered while trying...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H2

We once asked our SCA if we could, as sleeping car passengers, request a “Just for You” meal in place of what was on the regular long-distance menu and she thought that we could. (Although we didn’t order it, we were tempted.)

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H2

On a trip we made on Southwest Chief No. 4 in 2016, while we were passing through the Santa Fe National Forest, it was announced that orders were being taken for a “Just for You” meal that was being offered “for coach passengers only.” Those who ordered this special meal, consisting of fried...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Thank you for this information. The reason we asked this question is that, early next month, we’ll be making a same day connection with No. 30 in Chicago. Recently, we’ve been paying closer attention to SWC No. 4’s on-time performance. Due to heat-related speed restrictions and signal issues...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

We have a SWC same day Guaranteed Connection question: if SWC No. 4 is running late and misses connecting with CL No. 30 in CHI, will passengers with guaranteed connections automatically be booked onto Lake Shore Limited No. 48, assuming that it is not sold out? Those without laptops or smart...

Trouble on October's first Empire Builder

This is one advantage to traveling with a scanner. You can listen in on information being passed between the conductor and the dispatcher, the conductor and the engineer, the conductor and the station master, etc. Much of what you'll hear is not usually shared with the passengers.

Survey on the future of Amtrak

Thank you for this detailed information which I have copied for future reference. Here is the URL for the Amtrak Survey I received: https://www.amtraktrains.com/threads/survey-on-the-future-of-amtrak.87722/page-2#post-1047219

Survey on the future of Amtrak

I received the survey yesterday and started to take it. After answering a question about where I'd traveled to with "some other state" it suddenly took me to the Book Now page. When I used the back button to start over, it told me that I’d already taken the survey, even though it is supposed to...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

According to the Amtrak Train Status page, No. 3 departed from CHI today (7/30) on time and No. 4 departed from LAX 14 minutes late. Apparently, the derailment will be cleared and the tracks open by tomorrow when these two trains arrive there. If this is the case, and for the sake of those...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

I’m assuming that 3 will return to CHI and 4 will return LAX and that those who want to go back there can do so at no extra charge and will be entitled to a full refund of the cost of their tickets. (Sleeping car passengers should also get free meals during the trip back.) As stated in an...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

OP, thank you for this additional information on your attempts to get new Amtrak reservations for your Scout group after yours were cancelled due to the derailment on 7/24. An important function of the Southwest Chief is to provide long-distance transportation for people located between...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

We now make our SWC reservations 11 months in advance specifically so we can be sure of obtaining bedrooms in the 330 and 430 cars. If the SWC does lose the second sleeper in early September, what happens to those passengers who already have reservations in that sleeper? Will this be like 2022...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

The long-term Pacific Surfliner bus bridge between Oceanside and Irvine that was in place in 2023 was handled efficiently and professionally, so it can be done. The Dodge City derailment which occurred last May should have served as a wake up call to plan for how to deal with such an occurrence...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Thank you for this detailed account of what the Scout groups returning from the Philmont Scout Ranch on 7/24 had to go through as a result of SWC No. 4 being cancelled on short notice. Although Amtrak was not to blame for the derailment, there should have been some contingency plan in place to...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Had we been on board the No. 4 which departed from LAX and then was terminated in La Junta, we would undoubtedly have opted to return to LAX and then, rather than asking for a refund, had Customer Relations reschedule our trip to some future date. While we would have been disappointed at not...
