Portland Maine is a smaller walkable city and worth visiting. There is bus service available between the Transportation Center where Amtrak stops and the downtown area. There are probably other smaller cities that fit into this category.

One place I remember seeing them throw switches is at Palmer, back when the Vermonter used the New England Central (Former Central Vermont) between there and White River Jct. There were hand thrown switches to go from the siding to the NECR tracks.

I do know the workers get paid more like waitstaff wages, rather than the union scale wages paid to Amtrak attendants.

There isn't much they can do if Amtrak doesn't provide working car washers. I doubt they could offer cafe service for the same price that the current contractor is offering it.

I agree that all things being equal, having a common 60 hz frequency would be better. However considering all that is needed in the Corridor for SOGR I think that is a lower priority than for example constant tension catenary so trains aren't pulling the wires down on hot days.

I also haven't been on a Regional in a while but what I remember is leaving Boston the train tended to fill up from the rear forward so it was worth it to hoof it towards the front of the train for a good seat. Not sure about the setup at Washington.
