Coach USA owner of Megabus files for bankruptcy

In the case of intercity bus operation, there seems to be a sea of mediocrity or worse, with a few decent operators that at least try. Most likely they make most of their money on charters while the scheduled operations basically break even if they are lucky.

    More trouble for Boeing

Losing an engine in the sense of the engine failing to produce thrust is something that can be managed, I am sure pilots deal with engine out procedures as part of their training. On the other hand, having an engine actually fall off the plane would be a lot more serious due to the possible...

Coach USA owner of Megabus files for bankruptcy

That's too bad. Sounds like the Megabus was a fairly decent ride. Peter Pan has somewhat of a mixed reputation. If you go over to Tripadvisor there are some fairly horrific reviews there along with some good ones.

Freight shutdown due to strike in Canada

From what I have read, it sounds like the unions may have legitimate grievances about working conditions, but are not getting much support from the Liberal/NDP government who you would think would be their natural allies.

    Russian Railways stressed

Thanks. I did find it eventually by calling up Google maps which has the names in Latin alphabet as well as Cyrillic. I hadn't realized the location was closer to the border and not near Kursk itself.

    Russian Railways stressed

I tried to find Sudzha on OpenRailwayMap and was unsuccessful, doesn't help that the map is only in Cyrillic in that area - I can decode most Cyrillic letters but there are a few that still throw me. Kursk itself seems to be a significant railway junction.

    Russian Railways stressed

I have seen reports that the AFU have blown up a number of bridges in the Kursk Oblast which is hampering Russian troop and logistics transport, although the pictures I have seen appear to show highway bridges. I don't know if they have taken out any rail bridges. The Russians apparently use...

    Russian Railways stressed

Although you have to wonder how long the Ukrainians can hold out, given the difficulty of supplying troops in this incursion. But I guess this is not the forum for discussing military tactics, except where they affect train travel.

Is Chicago transit ready for the DNC?

The CTA was able to get the new Damen station on the Green Line (Lake St. L) open in time for the convention. Thom of Trains are Awesome has a nice report on this station which looks pretty impressive: Chicago’s Newest Station: Damen

    Albany Springfield Boston Train Service

I'm not sure how practical it is to try to make these towns along the northern tier bedroom communities given the commutes that would be involved. Having lived near Gardner and commuted for a while to a job along the Route 128 belt, it was an hour commute by road (when traffic was cooperating)...

    Amtrak bustitution discussion

I take it they did not offer anything for the sleeper passengers who would normally have been served dinner after 49 left Albany.

    Adirondack Trailways is no Adirondack

Last time I was there was probably the late 1960's/early 1970's when I was in college. I used to take the Public Service bus from Allentown to New York then get the subway to Penn Station or Grand Central to get the train to Boston. At that time it didn't seem too bad. As I recall it even had a...

B.C. man takes public transit all the way to Mexico for about US$200

It would be interesting to know his itinerary, given that he did not use Amtrak or Greyhound. Quite an accomplishment.

    Greyhound sounding Chicago alarm

Portland Station Relocation (Slides) They propose a shuttle between the new station site and the PTC.

    Albany Springfield Boston Train Service

Well I guess if the Commonwealth is that flush with cash that they can spend $$$ to create a second passenger route going through a relatively sparsely populated (by Massachusetts standards) area, all power to them. As long as the focus remains on Boston - Springfield - Albany as the first priority.

Amtrak through the "Middle of Nowhere"

Lamy NM has a population of 210 so may be the least populated town with an Amtrak stop, although being only 18 miles from Santa Fe it probably can't be considered remote. Although maybe back in the days when the San Francisco Zephyr was running via Wyoming, Borie WY might have been smaller.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H2

The Cafe car attendants on the Downeaster generally do this when I have ordered a cheeseburger. Note that they are employees of the contractor (NexDine) and are not Amtrak employees.

    Greyhound sounding Chicago alarm

Although that only applies to Concord Coach. Greyhound, in typical Greyhound fashion, used to have its own bus station on St. John St. but now stops on Marginal Way and Congress St, some distance from the PTC.

    Greyhound sounding Chicago alarm

I think Boston's arrangement is pretty good with the bus station right over the train station. As bus stations go it is a pretty decent facility with food, rest rooms etc.

    China - rail travel

YouTube vlogger Doc7Austin had a number of videos of his trips in China, many of which are fairly recent.
