    FY 2025 Federal Appropriations

We are projecting a $2 Trillion deficit in 2024 and we are going to solve that by cutting a few million from rail projects. Got it.

Future improvement possibilities for the Downeaster

It was taken out of Rockland on the last big "cleanout" freight and last I heard it was on the NECR out of Palmer headed to Montpelier. That was over a week ago.

    USA Rail Pass questions

For the LSL, the left side leaving NYC for the Hudson River views. Although I seem to recall going through Indiana there was a nice lake view on the right side though. The only other LD trains I have been on are the CZ and SWC and I don't recall one side being better than the other. Both of...

    A Tale of Two Cities

I believe DFDS still has an Oslo - Copenhagen ferry. We were planning a bucket list trip last year which had this as one alternative. Concerning the "Night Ferry" from London Victoria, I took it in summer 1977. It had 2 sleepers (CIWL I believe), one to Paris and one to Brussels towed behind...

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

Perhaps someone in the know can explain when there are times you can board a train at a different stop than what you are ticketed for, and when you can't. Is it different for the NEC than it is for other trains? Or is it based on how far apart the stations are? If I am ticketed to board a...

    A Tale of Two Cities

One ferry that I believe still runs is the Stena Line crossing between Harwich and Hook of Holland. This could be fairly efficient for someone traveling between the UK and the Netherlands (or on to Germany or France) where you travel overnight and wake up at your destination with a full day...

    Capitol Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I wonder if they have ever terminated/originated 30/29 at Pittsburgh? Perhaps the station is not equipped to do this, for example restocking the diner.

If you have a reservation, this may result in a no show at Metropark and result in your reservation being canceled. It would be better to change your reservation to Trenton, plus you might get a little money back.

    A Tale of Two Cities

On our last trip to the UK we departed back to the US from Dublin. This was partly because we wanted to visit Ireland but having pre clearance in Dublin and getting that all out of the way was nice, plus the Dublin airport experience seems less chaotic than Heathrow. The only drawback to...

VIA Jasper, Prince George and Prince Rupert Service

Thanks @Urban Sky for posting this article. A very interesting history that I was not aware of. My wife and I rode the Atlantic both ways in Aug/Sept 1981 so got this trip in before the first cancellation of the service. We actually intended to return on the Ocean but it was sold out whereas the...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Actually the LSL hasn't been too bad lately. Looking at the data for all of 2024 so far, there were only 7 occasions where train 49 was 2 hours or more late. Average delay was 7 min late. According to ASMAD.

VIA Jasper, Prince George and Prince Rupert Service

Interesting that the Atlantic had better cost recovery than the Ocean, yet the Ocean was the one maritime LD train that was saved. I guess because it was an all Canadian run rather than going through the US, and slightly better served New Brunswick (unless you happen to live in St. John).

    Combining points and cash

That's interesting that they refund points + cash the same way as they were purchased. Some points systems for example IHG hotels let you pay with points + cash but convert the cash to points, so that refunds end up being points only.

Amtrak Downeaster train hits tree in Haverhill, knocked out of service

The "engine" is actually an NPCU (non powered control unit) or "Cabbage" made from an F40PH locomotive. Apparently they hit the tree just North of Haverhill and were able to crawl into Haverhill station where the passengers could transfer to the MBTA Haverhill local to reach North Station.

Amtrak long distance trains - Power Socket types

These only provide a true ground if the box containing the outlet is itself grounded which is not always the case especially in older homes e.g. with the old "knob and tube" style wiring. Our house in Maine built in 1903 still had knob and tube upstairs until we had the whole house rewired. Our...

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

Garages may be ugly but they serve an important purpose for park and ride. The commuter rail on the North Side is fairly infrequent especially outside of rush hour and then you usually have to transfer to the subway anyway to get where you are going, so many times it was easier just to drive to...

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

Also I don't understand the reference to New Haven Union Station, unless they meant to say Newark and got it wrong.

    AGR Website

I recently saw posts on Facebook about AGR accounts being hacked. Had anybody heard anything about this? Here is one such comment: "Here's an update, and I suggest anyone with an Amtrak Guest Rewards account check it immediately. After 25" on hold, I talked with a Guest Rewards cs person who...
