    Rockies climb throttle position question

I see what you mean. I read Al Krug's famous HP vs. TE essay and I'm not sure that they can get down to 10 MPH in run 8, but pretty close, I guess. They would sound pretty awesome in that mode. I didn't know that about the '70s and '80s units not being about to run at full power even with no...

    Rockies climb throttle position question

I see what you mean. He said "engines," which is what threw me off. I think with AC motors it wouldn't be a problem, but I bet these have DC. ACs can pretty much take whatever you throw at them.

    Rockies climb throttle position question

I'm curious why the engines overheated. At 10 MPH they weren't in run 8, but even if they were, I don't see why it would matter. I would think that, to the prime movers, only throttle position matters and not speed. 74 MPH in the 8th notch should be the same as 15 MPH at the same setting to...

    Booking online on Amtrak website

I have been trying to book a roomette on a Denver to Chicago train and almost everything is sold out. I checked 10/10 and one is available for $661, so I tried to book it. Nope! "The accommodation on the train you selected is no longer available. Go back to the Select Trip page and choose...

    Same day Sleeper booking?

I was thinking about going from Denver to Chicago. The last time the train was 4 hours late in arriving in Denver. I'm thinking about taking a chance and checking the schedule on a particular day and going that night if it's on time. Does that seem doable?

    Booking online on Amtrak website

I thought I'd try booking a sleeper from Denver to Chicago. Easier said than done. The cost was $1312, which was okay. On the payment page I entered everything, checked the boxes, etc., but the payment button was grayed out. So I called and after 30 minutes of repetitive and annoying...

    What should Amtrak change?

Of course they are not. I was being facetious. We give them more money and they give us the finger.

    What should Amtrak change?

I only started riding the train a few years ago, so I am new to the joke that is Amtrak. It's hard to imagine people who rely on it. I live in Denver and like to go up to Glenwood Springs, CO a few times a year. Sometimes I drove the 160 miles and sometimes I booked a room on Amtrak. I used...

I have installed the (for Android) Scanner Radio app for my phone. Does that work as well?

The awful experience of being on hold with Amtrak

I wonder how much it would cost to just fix the awful recorded greeting you have to tolerate when calling Amtrak and adding an estimated hold time system so that you at least have some idea how long you'll be stuck on hold. The depressing and old music, the endlessly repeated self-serving...

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

I have booked a trip through the Rockies and have room 4 going and 7 for the trip back. They are on opposite sides. Here's my question, and I hope it makes sense: Will I sit on one side of the train on the way out and another on the way back? In other words, do they turn the cars around at...

The awful experience of being on hold with Amtrak

Good point. The old trite "our menu options have changed" nonsense really grinds my gears. I have mentioned that before on other forums. As far as Amtrak fixing these problems, I'm not holding my breath.

The awful experience of being on hold with Amtrak

It's me, I'm old school. I hate bad service, but it's so normal now that it's being accepted. Whatever the reason for long hold times (95 minutes as of now), there are ways to make it suck less. Long hold times are made worse when there is no indication of how long it will be, and when you...

The awful experience of being on hold with Amtrak

They take it to a new level of suckage. Call them at 800-872-7245 and you'll be greeted with their silly and long-winded Covid announcements. Then, be prepared to wait. How long? No way to tell because there is no hold queue announcements. You'll get stuck with stale music and the endless...

    Awful Trip on The Zephyr
