    Coke or Pepsi?

Back in the Pepsi days on Amtrak.....if you were on the Maple Leaf to Toronto all you had to do was wait until the Border at Niagara Falls ON. Amktak's food items came off the Cafe Car and VIA's went on including Coke...

    Your packed suitcase!

Nothing more now than a small roll-aboard and if it's only a short 3 or 4 day trip....just a backpack. I also used to load up a carry-on with two cameras (still and video) laptop, GPS, chargers, powerbar, an assortment of timetables, maps, atlases and track-guides along with a folder with my...

    Tipping on Amtrak

No Cabin Attendant on the Newfoundland Ferry showing you to your room. They give you a Key Card when checking in and you just go to the cabin upon boarding with your gear. Beds are already made up.....there is no daytime mode. Cabins are cleaned during the 6 hrs in port between crossings. I do...

New VIA Timetable and 'Preference' Update

I assume you're talking about the remote service trains? In non covid times they would run 3 days a week each way but I guess VIA has determined the best schedule serving the most is to depart the city on a Friday and return Sun night. The other trains would also serve more travelers over a...

    Reasonable Quiet Car Rules

No cellphones. A quiet conversation with a seatmate is OK but if you're awake at 2am.....No! And even the head/ear phone of a seatmate can be annoying.

    "The Dining Car Problem"

Are the meals reheated in Amtrak Dining Cars actually microwaved or do they use a convection oven? I can see perhaps a hamburger or pizza.......or is it just the misconception that if it's reheated....it must have been 'nuked'?

    Video......first VIA #1 in 14 months.

Now that was a Loop! Down one side of Lake Simcoe on the Newmarket (100 miles) and back up the other side on the Bala (90 miles). The ONR Northlander used to do that.

There used to be a Diamond Crossing at Snider but is now a Fly-over. This is to permit all-day GO service on the Newmarket Sub. The York Sub passing under the fly-over is CN's main east-west freight route through Toronto.

There is no need to wye the Canadian. Looping it around the city works just fine and that's the way they've done it going back 30+ years to when VIA lost the use of the loop track at the Spadina Coach Yard where Rogers Centre (SkyDome) now sits. Only on a rare occasion has the train needed to...

Passenger Train Journal 2021:2 with Eyewitness Accounts of Amtrak at its Creation

My favorite too and the one magazine I read cover to cover. I would cancel my subscription to TRAINS before I'd cancel PTJ. It was so nice to see it come back a few years ago after about a 10 year hiatus!

There is just no convenient way to turn the Canadian in Toronto other than doing the 'loop' around the city. On rare occasions they've sent the consist to Bayview (Hamilton) to be turned.....but that is a 75 mile roundtrip.

The Video link you posted above also shows westbound #1 going out the west side of Union Station. It's going up the Newmarket Sub to Snider where it will head across the York and back to the Bala at Doncaster. On all my trips on the Canadian (since the line beyond Barrie was...

    "The Dining Car Problem"

Exactly! This is Breakfast served westbound on the Ocean departing Ste-Foy at 6:30am. The Bacon, Eggs and Roast Potatoes were prepared by a caterer 24 hours earlier, chilled and put aboard in Halifax. Then reheated in convection ovens and re-plated. The toast, coffee and juice are freshly...

    Station Adjacent Hotels

Hopefully the Adirondack will return this summer......and when you arrive at Central Station in Montreal just step off your train and right into an elevator on the concourse level up to Fairmont's Queen Elizabeth Hotel directly above the station.

What's VIA's plan for the Renaissance cars?

And here's one of the reasons VIA's Ocean lost the use of the Loop Track. Just so much lay-down area needed for the Containers offloaded from a ship the size of the 'Marco Polo' In Halifax this morning and heading for New York tonight. This thing is huge!...... "For the second time in less...

What's VIA's plan for the Renaissance cars?

There was corrosion from salt encountered at grade crossings (probably something they wouldn't see in the UK).......also something about the integrity after the skin was opened to add insulation. And I remember reading the warranty would be void if the shell was repainted. Guess that's how we...
