    Amtrak Station to Hotel

I frequently walk in the general area of the Miyako Hotel at night, and I always feel safe -- with the caveat that I'm a 40-something white male who's over 6 feet and walks fairly quickly. (You may encounter panhandlers or unhoused people along the walk, but the latter should leave you alone...

    The most unusual passengers

I first learned about furries on local BBS systems in the mid-1980s, so they're definitely not a new thing.

    Kansas City Union Station

12th Street and Vine doesn’t exist anymore - I believe “urban renewal” (and streets being rerouted/truncated) is to blame. The ***** Leagues Museum and the Jazz Museum are a little further south, at 18th Street and Vine.

How to sell old model railroading sets/trains ?

You‘re correct - American Flyer was S gauge, 1:64 scale. That’s between Lionel’s O gauge (1:48 scale) and HO gauge (1:87 scale). Although American Flyer effectively went out of business in the late 1960s, Lionel ended up with their assets and revived the name to make some S-gauge models...

"Earn 5X Points this Holiday Season"

I got the offer with the free card. I suspected it was because I use that card very rarely.

    Los Angeles layover

If you're able to walk a little farther, there is a Doubletree hotel -- probably a step or two up from the Metro Plaza in terms of quality -- about 7/10ths of a mile from the station. It's a straight shot down Los Angeles Street, which is the street that ends at the main driveway into Union...

Ireland rail - a few photos

Well, of course... it's called Waterford, not Waterbridge. :D

My review of my Gathering train trips - October 2021

The day before the Gathering, I discovered that the Harold Washington Library in the Loop had a scale model of the "Bean." (It's under glass, so some of what you're seeing in this photo is the overhead lighting fixtures reflected in the display case.)

    Chicago

And in addition to Sarah's advice, let me state that there would be no problem with wearing a baseball cap with a logo on it (even if it's the San Francisco Giants logo), so there's no need to buy something generic -- just bring what you already have.

Insider.com and businessinsider.com stories about Amtrak trips

No, partly as a result of the incident in which a Southwest flight attendant had teeth knocked out by a passenger. The five selections I listed are the only beverage choices, period. On a Southwest flight I was on last week, one of the flight attendants claimed that another reason for the...

Insider.com and businessinsider.com stories about Amtrak trips

They used to do it on every flight (unless turbulence was such that the flight attendants couldn't get up), but it's currently limited to flights of 250 miles or more, with a very limited beverage selection (only Coke, Diet Coke, 7Up, bottled water, or coffee).

New Pacific Surfliner schedule now available (Effective October 25, 2021)

P.M. times are bolded, and A.M. times are not.

Help with layover in Los Angeles. What to do in 12 hours?

There's nothing particularly touristy at the titular intersection of Pico and Sepulveda - an office building, a lumber/hardware store, a couple strip malls indistinguishable from all the others in L.A. They should at least put up a monument to that song.

    Chicago

In the Pilsen neighborhood southwest of the Loop, this is a pub specializing in British-style meat pies, which a friend of mine from college owns with her husband: Pleasant House Pub It's a little over half a mile from the Halsted station on the Orange Line, or about three-quarters of a mile...

New Pacific Surfliner timetable effective Oct. 25

Thanks for putting this together! Hopefully they can add more trains to get those 3-hour gaps filled in eventually.

It's fair to say he wasn't impressed - Sydney to Melbourne in Oz

The historical notes in that article are interesting (and I see it appears to be an excerpt from a much longer book). Very reminiscent of my experience on that same train in 2009, although I had a compartment all to myself, breakfast all came in one cardboard tray, and I didn't get a...

Quick trip to Boston. Fly one way on United and 449 back to Chicago.

On the road trip I did in August, that's what one hotel was offering. I brought the bag back up to my room... only to discover that one of the items was a breakfast burrito that needed to be microwaved, and there wasn't a microwave in my room. (There was one in the breakfast area in the lobby.)...

Quick trip to Boston. Fly one way on United and 449 back to Chicago.

Could you tell if this was supposed to be a temporary situation due to Covid-19, or the regular state of affairs? A lot of hotels have cut back on their breakfast offerings and blamed it on the pandemic.

    Using a "Vanity" email address

I just changed my password on Amtrak.com, and had no trouble getting the verification code at my @ellwanger.tv address. (I guess technically it's not a "vanity" email address, because I own the whole ellwanger.tv domain and have to do some of the setup/maintenance work myself.)

    CZ CHI to EMY

Ha, I was thinking about the fact that the boat trams are about as "Covid-safe" as public transportation could be.
