Remembering the Golden Age that Preceded Amtrak

Thanks, I set it to record. My DVR tells me it first aired in 2006, but I don't remember having seen this before.

Business class on Woverine-Is it worth the extra cost?

Sorry I wasn't clear -- yes, the Superliner coach is used as overflow for business class.

    Lounge in Chicago

Yes, for $35 (see the "Purchasing Day Passes" section on this page: Station Lounges).

Business class on Woverine-Is it worth the extra cost?

The main business class car on Surfliner train sets is a standard Surfliner car (also with 2x2 seating) -- the Superliner coach is basically used for overflow. (I've only ever sat in the Surfliner car when I've been in Surfliner business class.)

An Amtrak Valentine's Day Incident from the Past

I couldn't find anything specific about a February 14, 1988, earthquake, but I did find news reports of a 5.0 earthquake on February 11, which was said to be an aftershock of the October 1, 1987, Whittier Narrows earthquake (which was "only" magnitude 5.9 but caused a fair amount of damage...

Sins Against Humanity are a Part of American Railroad History

1937 photo of safety award-winning taxicab drivers in front of Tampa Union Station -- you can see "White Waiting Room" lettering above the station entrance, partly blocked by a palm tree. In the Jim Crow days, this station had separate waiting rooms with the ticketing office between them. I'm...

NYC to LA BY TRAIN (Youtube) -- My nomination for best Amtrak-related video (Youth Category)

Filming was shut down in mid-March 2020 due to the pandemic, but it later resumed. It's currently scheduled to be released on December 22 of this year.

    Sleeper Pricing?

I applied for, and paid for, a Global Entry renewal last week... and within 36 hours, it had been renewed with no interview required.

Marriott food on pre Amtrak Auto Train

Any facts or opinions about the state of Marriott's hotels, or anything else to do with the Marriott corporation circa 2021, has nothing to do with the quality of food that could be provided to Amtrak... ...because Marriott isn't in the institutional food service/catering business anymore. As...

Is Live Camera from Crewe Station, UK of interest?

I've been here (York) -- on a trip from London to Edinburgh, I stopped over for a few hours to visit the National Railway Museum, which is very close by.

Historical Discussion: Cities with two or more Amtrak stations

You'd probably consider this a "suburbs" situation (and they're all on the same route), but I'll mention it before someone else does: Los Angeles Union Station, Van Nuys, and Chatsworth are all in the City of Los Angeles.

    Beech Grove Round II

It's the result of a merger between the Third National Bank and the Fifth National Bank (and "Third Fifth" sounds like a description of a very heavy drinker). If it happened in these modern times, they'd probably come up with a brand-new incomprehensible name, such as SunTrust and BB&T merging...

    Memorable Amtrak Dining Experiences

I assume it would only be offered to a table mate with whom one has been having a decent chat, and it can therefore be brought up in the conversation: "Oh, hey, since I'm a sleeping car passenger, I get a free dessert, but I don't really need one right now (patting stomach). Would you be...

Why does the Sunset Limited stop in Ontario instead of somewhere farther east in the Inland Empire?

Those were just three Southern California cities that Jack Benny and his writers thought sounded funny together -- they had no relation to any actual railroad operations. (In fact, Anaheim is in a different direction from the other two.)

    Memorable Amtrak Dining Experiences

Even just going back to the early '10s: the bratwurst on a pretzel bun was a very tasty lunch option.

AU Members with Frequent Flyer Affinity Status

I used to work for a large Silicon Valley company that, in 2008, signed a big business travel contract with United, and allowed any employee who wanted it to get their lowest level of Premier status (Premier Associate -- I don't think they have the equivalent anymore). I went to Australia in...

Empire Builder question (re Wolf Point)

Looks like that's the result of that part of the platform being in the station building's shadow. (It's on the north side, if I've got my directions correct.)

Hotels at Amtrak connection points nationwide

Even if you're not actually traveling via JFK, you can go there for dinner or drinks (or just to see the lobby).

    New DOT Secretary?

I don't necessarily consider this one a positive, speaking as someone who was laid off from a company that was consulting with McKinsey.

SEPTA to turn off "Passenger Advance Lights" on NHSL

The South Shore Line's flag stops have passenger-activated lights. (This is Beverly Shores - not my photo.)
