Los Angeles Union Station and environs

That’s disappointing news C-Z, how long ago were you there? A quick search on the net tells me that it sure isn’t promoted…

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024

Does the wrapping obscure the view if you are in the train or is it a sunshade type of wrap?

@joelkfla & @Traveller - I can't thank you enough for this heads up. I've put it on our itinerary and am really looking forward to it.

Interesting, I had seen their affiliated diner in City Hall while I was looking over maps of the area. Getting a pic of City Hall is on my list of things to do for a couple reasons - I enjoy looking at and when possible touring old buildings, especially court houses and state capitols. This...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

This makes me wonder why Amtrak doesn’t just throw in the towel and schedule stops long enough for passengers to get off and actually eat? Maybe a 1-1 1/2 hour stop where there’s a crew change. Passengers can feel comfortable getting off and walking a block or so. Local growth would occur as...

    Footrests in coach

My better half is 5’4”. We just rode three LD trains, overnight on each. She reports no problems with the footrest location. She was good with the leg support. & footrest combo.

    Walking Stick

Barring another derailment there is no air travel in our plans. Just Amtrak and public transit. Appreciate the replies thus far.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Your best bet would be to carry supper on board with you in Birmingham. Atlanta is about a 30 minute stop, but it is close to midnight and there is nothing open and close by. Washington is a longer stop, but I think it’s pretty risky to think you could get in & back out in time to reboard. We...

    Walking Stick

Not really a special need, just a want… Planning to do at least a short hike in Yosemite and to trek across the Golden Gate Bridge. Traveling by rail pass in coach. Would I be able to take my walking stick on the adventure, ir best to leave it home? Any thoughts as to carrying it on any San...

Survey on the future of Amtrak

I don’t think so, we are the one’s getting kicked out. For Georgia, one of the listed cities was Macon - which has no Amtrak service.

Survey on the future of Amtrak

Put me down as another “tried & fail”. Hit somewhere else in the state and it kicked me out.

Survey on the future of Amtrak

I think it said only coach fare, and several trains including the Acela was not eligible…

Survey on the future of Amtrak

I got the survey, when I clicked on it it immediately said I had already done it…. Not sure when that would have been, but like you, hope they send me the coupon.

Thank you all for the recent responses. I am happy to hear that y'all are still happy with the Olvera St. offerings. How about the homeless situation and how safe you feel outside of the train station?

    Baton Rouge, LA

@cassie225 - We enjoyed a day in BR a couple years ago, I wanted to see how tailgating at a Tigers game compared. Had a great day of it! But it was a Saturday so we couldn’t do the Capitol. A couple pics of the museum would be appreciated, the one pic in the wiki page looks real nice, with...

    Baton Rouge, LA

There is freight traffic through BR, so surely there used to be passenger service. Edit - just looked on Wiki and yes they sure did have passenger service and a station that served the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley (Y&MV) RR - later the Illinois Central RR. BR was a stop on the run from Memphis...

New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

This is good news for the Mobile end. What is happening on the Baton Rouge end? Seems like that could be a much easier project since it’s all within Lousiana.

How many crews/trainsets are required to run the long haul routes?

Having ridden the Crescent a couple times now, and the LSL & CONO recently; I have a few questions and this seems a good thread to post them in. 1. For LD trains, who is the “typical” rider? For coach & sleeper? Surely Amtrak knows who they are. From my very limited experience it looks like...
