What I miss about Amtrak train rides . . .

    Increased Security Presence on Trains

I was on 66 two weeks ago and an APD officer boarded in New Haven. He stayed on until Providence. I saw him hanging out with the crew in the cafe. I did not see him interact with any passengers. I also noticed a very visible police presence at BOS and CHI inside the stations. Outside of...

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

I had my chance at Flex Dining this past weekend on 49 and 50. Had the Asian Noodle Bowl on 49 and the Chicken Fettuccini on 50. Both were awful. Eating the noodles was like chewing gum. Just overall tasteless and horrible presentation. Breakfast was just OK. The LSA on 49 was wonderful...

    #66/#449

I thought about taking coach on 449 the transferring at ALB but decided to "rough it" in the 449 sleeper. I'm fine with the walk. I rode 66 in the later days of it having a sleeper and it was very nice, I too hope that it returns.

    #66/#449

Good info, thanks. I'll have the long ride from BOS to CHI on 449 so will have plenty of time to catch up on the sleep. I lucked out on the roomette numbers, #3 on 449 and #1 on 50 on the way home, which is on the gorge side of the train. I understand there will be a long walk, 8 cars by my...

    #66/#449

I'm dredging up a 2012 thread I started. I was not able to take the trip then but I have used points for an early Feb. trip. I will be in Business Class on 66 from RVR to BOS and have been assigned seat 3A. The car is empty at this time but for my reservation. I'd appreciate any information...

Any rail cams that pick up the Coast Starlight?

Hosted by the Lewis County Museum so I'm guessing that is where it is.

Any rail cams that pick up the Coast Starlight?

Yep, the CS passed through Chehalis at 11:55 PST on 11/6/19. Link to camera

Any rail cams that pick up the Coast Starlight?

Virtual Railfan has a live camera in Chehalis, WA. I've seen Cascade trains on that webcam

    Amtrak Survey

Neroden is generally correct on a lot of things but I'd like to see a citation on workplaces offering "no vacation time any more." I'm hoping this is not some new trend in workforce benefits that will steamroll me. I currently enjoy 5 weeks of PTO after 36 years of hard labor. Some of which...

    Viewliner side for the Hudson

It was 49, the vestibules on the VL's were forward meaning the bedrooms were in front and the even number roomettes on the left.  I'm not sure if the video shows a usual or special circumstances consist but it is a relatively current

    Viewliner side for the Hudson

If the orientation of the viewliners on the NYP sections has not changed since 2016 the EVEN numbered roomettes are on the left facing the Hudson.  I was in roomette 8.

Location of sleepers on Capitol Limited's rump consist?

I took the winter  "rump" consist Feb of 2018 and was in the first sleeper.  The horn was very noticeable.  I cannot recall the car number in the consist but I'm guessing other posters will have that information.  With that information you may be able to modify your reservation to the second...

When was the last time you rode in an Amtrak dome car?

Back in the day when the James Whitcomb Riley combined with the Hilltopper to Chicago and a number of times when the CL was single level with a dome. Prior to Amtrak on some of the Zephyrs and the original B & O Cap Ltd. The dome that had the spotlights that lit up the scenery at night.

July Changes to Lake Shore and Capitol Limited Dining

The dessert in a picture posted by PVD in the other thread showed the dessert made by Daystar Desserts. I find their offerings very good having them in other boxed lunches, purchased from grocers and restaurants. They were an Ashland, VA based company until recently they merged with a Mass...

    Help with Caledonia Sleeper

Thanks to both. I'll likley stay with what I have as the first class pax has access to the lounge. This will likely be my first and last opportunity to enjoy an overnight sleeper in the UK so I'll take full advantage. It will be interesting to see what differences in service quality exist...

    Help with Caledonia Sleeper

The later part of July 2018 we will be taking our first trip on the Caledonian from London to Inverness. Travelling will be me, my wife and 20 year old daughter. We booked first class accommodations. Since this is our first time I'm looking for suggestions/tips from those that have ridden to...
