    Tipping on Amtrak

Cruises are a modern thing and are nothing like the time when people crossed oceans as a form of point to point transportation. Modern cruises did not exist at the time when aviation and navigation diverged. Here's some examples of the nautical roots of aviation: - Airplanes were called "ships"...

Seat numbers; why ACDF instead of ABCD?

The ERJ-145s go A-BC on American.

    Tipping on Amtrak

People tip on trains because that's the historical/cultural tradition. Air travel came later, and has nautical roots instead of railroading roots, so the there's no tradition/culture of tipping there. But, there are those who will bring the flight attendants gifts such as chocolates in hopes of...

Seat numbers; why ACDF instead of ABCD?

The Amfleet Is were originally delivered with the seats placarded as such. The Amfleet IIs have placards with straight numeric seat numbering. I don't know if Amtrak specified this, or if Budd simply just did what they did.

North East Corridor (NEC) night train and sleeper journey

Back when that Good Morning America train ran, Lansdowne was named Yawkey, and only had a side platform on track 2. I think that the superliners might have issues with the bridges over by the Newton stops, but they might also fit just fine, because it's entirely possible that no one has...

Inaugural run of the new "Night Owl"

He has 761 subscribers and 53 videos. He's not doing this for any appeal, he's nowhere close to qualifying for the YouTube partner program, which means he gets no monetary benefit out of uploading his videos. He's doing it for fun. It's unfortunate that some people absolutely need to look for...

North East Corridor (NEC) night train and sleeper journey

No. I think Worcester is as far east as they can go. Back in 2008, Good Morning America had their Whistle Stop Tour which used a special train with Superliners (the consist was two P42s, an NPCU (90225, specially modified with dome antennas for broadcasting while on the road), three superliners...

    Amtrak booking website/issues/timetables removed

CO bought out UA, but kept the UA name. They kept SHARES because at the time, they figured that SHARES, which was designed to run on almost any computer, would be useful should they buy up more airlines. I'd imagine the idea that they're the top dog in the merger might have had something to do...

    Amtrak booking website/issues/timetables removed

Just because ARROW is old (and possibly obsolete) doesn't make it useless. Someone said it's based on Sabre? American Airlines and Jetblue both currently use Sabre. It's gotten facelifts, new interfaces, but the back end is still the old system. I had access a few years ago, and typing [[AMK...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

I do apologize if this was mentioned before, but I didn't really find anything specific on this with a quick search. Does Amtrak California *need* bilevels? Since the contract has been taken over by Siemens for single level cars, is there still a need for bilvels? If so, could Amtrak just do...

Damn, the links in the second link you shared are already gone!

I'm sure that the original link is now 5 years out of date, seeing as that's how long ago it was posted.

    Amtrak booking website/issues/timetables removed

If I search up the names of the trains/services on Google, it still brings me to a page for the train/service where I can click Schedule to get the 2020 timetable. Reading one where it has "Will Not Operate" dates, I think they removed them from the front of the website until they can publish...

    Amtrak booking website/issues/timetables removed

Under "Schedules" there was a link to downloadable timetables, but that link is now gone. Going directly to the schedules and timetables page also yields a page that isn't very useful. What happened? Is Amtrak working on new timetables right now? Or are they not going to publish them anymore so...

    448/449 Bustitution

Maybe whoever made the alert was going off of the departure date of the train.

Am I reading this correctly? Monday through Thursday? So the Friday trains will operate with train service?

What does Amtrak do for non-guaranteed connections?

I haven't taken Amtrak in a while, and wanted to go on a bit of a joy ride, and the half off sale is giving me an excuse to do it sooner than later. I want to take the Lake Shore Limited from Boston to Springfield, take the Amtrak Hartford Line from Springfield to New Haven, and then take the...

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

What more do they have to test on the NEC for the Chargers? I thought they already tested them on the NEC when they borrowed the one from IDOT a few years ago.

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

Isn't the service to Disney World being done with Disney's blessing? I suppose maybe Disney could flex their muscles if FDOT wants to hold it hostage.

What should we advocate for passenger rail and Amtrak?

I think that the first thing I'd want to advocate for is some sort of regulatory authority to oversee Amtrak (and possibl when it comes to customer relations and consumer protection regulatory policy. When an airline wrongs you, you can file a complaint with the USDOT who will view it, and...
