Staffed to Unstaffed Stations Master Thread

Ah, I see. I'm guessing at more and more stations in smaller cities and towns still with an agent or 2(like both you and SarahZ said in that other thread), that sadly I wouldn't be surprised if Amtrak and the state agencies that run state supported trains are just letting the remaining agents...

Kalamazoo station's ticket window to close in 2020

North Carolina and Kansas have station host volunteer programs, at certain stations as well. I.e. for Kansas, at least the Dodge City station has one. For North Carolina, Greensboro, Raleigh, Charlotte, and a few others have them. Considering how much Amtrak ridership there is in Michigan, I'm...

Thanks. I will take a look at both of those links, very soon.

My trip to the Gathering ...plus RARE Mileage that I didn't really see

Really nice travel report, Bill! Thanks for posting all that. I knew some of you guys would eventually post your reports, but that of course we all are busy and work at our own individual paces, which don't always allow for that to be posted right away. Also it was nice to read your report on...

    Gardner article

Was that really mentioned in any articles, or say you heard in like some online clip of a hearing on Amtrak you remember watching online somewhere? Or are you just trying to imagine what Anderson probably thinks in his head? Which sadly, probably exactly is this. :(

Staffed to Unstaffed Stations Master Thread

Sadly, it looks like Amtrak may be about to do another round of ticket agent cutbacks. :( This article confirms Kalamazoo will become unstaffed in early 2020, at an undetermined date. To me though, why Kalamazoo of all staffed Amtrak stations? KAL is one of the busiest Amtrak stations in that...

How do I get to Niagara Falls from Chicago?

I'm glad you mentioned the alternate idea of transferring in Rochester, NY(between Lake Shore and Maple Leaf), since I was worried(till seeing your post) noone else would mention that alternate idea if you didn't want to transfer at Buffalo-Depew.

My trip to the Gathering ...plus RARE Mileage that I didn't really see

Thanks MARC for starting this thread, and posting what your travel experience out to the 2019 Gathering and back was like. I've been slightly disappointed, that so far I haven't seen a lot of travel reports from those who've went to the Gathering this year. Hopefully that changes, over the next...

My trip to the Gathering ...plus RARE Mileage that I didn't really see

Riding the Capitol east of Pittsburgh to DC, is still on my to do list someday. Though the Cardinal will be hard to beat, that's for sure. And for sure, I've thought about taking the Capitol east to Cumberland, and riding on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad(IIRC the name of it) to...

    Line Numbers/Consist Listings

Speaking of this, how often has the Cardinal ever ran with Superliner cars? I sure have a feeling it's probably been rare when that has occurred, and only when the train is started/ended in Washington, DC, due to NEC track construction work that'd prevent it from being run all the way into NYC.

    Charleston, West Virginia

If the online reviews I read on google are any indication, it sounds like it's more some random outdoor displays and a few statues in an outdoor area you can visit any time, rather than a proper indoor museum per se. I hadn't yet looked up where the Shoney's Big Boy Museum is on google street...

    Charleston, West Virginia

NOT the one in South Carolina, for the record of course lol! Anyway I was thinking down the road, I may do a trip to Charleston via the Cardinal. Have visited here a few times in the past on road trips, but have never taken a trip here via Amtrak before myself. And like my other past threads...

    Amtrak's Online Presence

What do you think this is going to mean, by suddenly doing assigned seating in any trains with business class? Not sure if that's necessary to do for business class seats on Amtrak, but that's just me. And ugh, probably just another weird idea by Richard Anderson, to implement! As for someone...

    Richard Anderson - Bloomberg article

I also don't want to see the Sunset split up into 2 different trains either, as I get the gut feeling Anderson wants to do. Ditto with the Southwest Chief, and of course that famously stupid bus bridge idea between western Kansas and Albuquerque a year or 2 back. Only someone as stupid as...

Rod Stewart Reveals his setup 26 years in the making

I was recently looking at the pics that leaked online of Rod Stewart's train models that he constructed, and those are amazing! I so wish I could visit wherever he constructed those so I could visit those in person, myself. BTW if you're ever in Chicago(and not to sidetrack this thread too...

    Richard Anderson - Bloomberg article

Speaking of Palm Springs, it slightly amazes me with all the extra service Amtrak California(and what CalTrans helps to support), that there isn't an extra scheduled train earlier in the day running east from LA to Palm Springs. And ditto with a later in the morning westbound train(vs. the...

    Columbus (NM) Train Depot Museum

Interesting that show/column keeps track, of all the times people didn't realize New Mexico was really a state! I guess you really are right that there has been occasional confusion between Mexico the country, and New Mexico the state for so many years.

UP Big Boy #4014 Tour the Southwest 2019

Since it sadly looks like I won't be able to catch this train this year, how often does Union Pacific run #4014(Big Boy) or #844 for special runs? Do they do a few runs of this train a year, or is it done less frequently than doing some special runs of it each year? (i.e. like once every who...

    Columbus (NM) Train Depot Museum

I relooked on a New Mexico map today, and now the triangle route you're talking about(NM Highway 15 to NM 35 to NM 152 to US 180) makes sense to me now! Forgive me that I was wondering if there was anything more signficant about San Lorenzo, NM, till realizing that coincidentally is the same...

    More Questions: DEN to ORL

Thanks for answering the question about CPAP machines(which I thought was permitted, but I wasn't sure), and about shoes. I think I did weirdly forget to answer the part, about whether you could take shoes off while in your seat! Not sure why I forgot to answer that question, but somehow I did...
