    Chicago to Emeryville on Zephyr

Indeed. However, comma, not all Superliners are exact copies of each other.

    Chicago to Emeryville on Zephyr

There's usually a vertical post. Barring that, just hooking my stuff together is enough of a deterrent for someone to grab my bag(s) in error. And if you are able to put it together in the rear of the compartment, that's a help. Even when I leave bags in the lounge at the station, I tie them...

Electrical supply in Southwest Chief Bedroom?

Whatever floats your boat. Be careful when opening the windows to dump the ashes. It irritates the crew when they blow back in. We have one rollaboard with the supplies, which lives downstairs. The "FLEX Meals" stuff would gag a vulture. We take long trips for the enjoyment of the AMTRAK...

Electrical supply in Southwest Chief Bedroom?

Well, with a 15 amp 120 V breaker you theoretically can pull 1800 watts at 120V. I wouldn't try that, but 900-1100 watts works jes' fine. I have had no pushback, only awe (or pity for the crazy people, but while the others are eating slop, we are having everything from fresh made Eggs McDumont...

Electrical supply in Southwest Chief Bedroom?

I'll take a look the next time I ride. I just don't remember, the last time I looked at a panel. I'd bet the coffee are has its own circuit.

I've not had any issues with leaving bags in the downstairs rack. Of course, electronics, things of value, important papers, stay with me. As lots of bags, rollaboards and other luggage can look alike, I carry a cable I made of small aircraft cable from the hardware store, with a combination...

Electrical supply in Southwest Chief Bedroom?

900Watts is 7.5 Amps at a nominal 120 Volts. So that's half the capacity of the breaker. No problem there.

Electrical supply in Southwest Chief Bedroom?

Grab a Keurig Single Cup brewer. Then you can make hot water, coffee, tea, instant soup, whatever. Used by itself in a room it works just fine. I've made coffee for SAs and even another guest or two when the car coffee urns were discontinued.

Electrical supply in Southwest Chief Bedroom?

I have discovered a 15Amp breaker in the cubby with the trash can in each bedroom and the Family bedroom. It feeds the outlet (sometimes 2) in the room. Appears to be original construction, not an add on. Would make sense to have one or two buses down the car, with individual rooms protected...

    Heartland Flyer Versus Car Carrier

The amount of energy that is involved in such an incident is staggering. And so will be the repair bills and insurance settlements.

    Heartland Flyer Versus Car Carrier

Yup. Been there, got the shirt, did the repairs.

    Heartland Flyer Versus Car Carrier

Your first sentence is, of course, spot on. And indeed, really low clearance trucks such as floats, lowboys, heavy haulers and the rest should check the route beforehand. I had 6-8" of ground clearance as the norm and could overinflate the airbags if necessary. But I always checked my route...

    Heartland Flyer Versus Car Carrier

BRAKING. You can BREAK a train using the BRAKES. "Bigholing" a train, or performing an emergency stop means dumping the train brake line, which immediately sets all brakes to maximum stopping power. Power is also removed from the driving axles on the engine. Yes, it is to be avoided when at all...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

AFAIK, they entrees are nuked. But if they are sometimes heated in the oven, it might explain the overcooked on he perimeter and undercooked in the center slop I have experienced. This was the reason I went to bringing my own.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

--------------------------------------------- Indeed, there was some preprepared and blanched/precooked/Cryovaced food. Mashed potatoes were instant but were the good kind. Corn and green beans were canned/reheated, just like at home. Steaks were semi cooked, Cryovaced and grilled. Eggs were...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Take a look at Amazon. They have a number of small ones. I tote mine in a rollaboard, which contains my coffeemaker, and some supplies in the cavity.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

AMTRAK is VERY much aware of the total dissatisfaction with their nukeable garbage. Someone somewhere convinced them to spend a boatload of money developing this crap, and they probably have a warehousefull of it somewhere they don't want to write off. Good Lord, if they had made an agreement...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

That's the reason we take our survival kit on the Eagle. Keurig one cupper, electric cooler chest, "the pantry", corn squeezings, and the micro microwave oven. AMTRAK doesn't even apologize that the slop they serve doesn't even resemble the presentation in their menus, ads and promos. False...

What's the deal with the Texas Eagle?

Thanks for the info. Dammit! I think they have a Department of How to Urinify Customers. So, we'll take the cooler and Keurig along again next time.

    Possible Crescent trip next year

If you have the time, two days in New Orleans gives you plenty of pad, and a good amount of time to enjoy a lttle of the Crescent City. Hopefully by the time you get there, recovery from the latest storms will be further along. It really breaks my heart to see my old home town get such a...
