A day in the life on the Eaglette

Thanks for the info! I had not run across the bid up thing. I usually book verbally with AmtrakGuestrewards. Once I can get a hold on an AMTRAK itinerary, then I build the rest of my trip. When I went through Temple enroute LAX last months, I saw a few changes around the station. There used to...

A day in the life on the Eaglette

The new Taylor Logistics Yard is working the kinks out of the new site. They should have the rest of the Wye and makeup tracks finished soon. They are shipping dozens of Autoracks full of Teslas out of there every day. They kindasorta underestimated the traffic. (And no, it is not in Hutto...

Nervous First Timer with some questions.

Amazon and others have a short (<>3') extension cord with USB sockets. Mine has a flat plug, fairly heavy duty cable, and on the end are three ac sockers and two USB sockets. Perfect for roomettes, coach seats and the Sightseer lounge. I also have a small LED reading light, rechargeable, clip...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

The "brownie", which is more like a bitter dry piece of roofing material from a 2nd rate chocolate factory has never appealed to me. The "Buttercakes" are pretty good. Alas, last week I brought home a couple of the "Buttercakes", but my cats found them and devoured them. Good thing I am...

    What should Amtrak change?

The cost of tunnel Internet service when automobile traffic is not involved would be hideous. Not enough traffic to justify it. It was tried with the IMTS mobile phones installed on some of the Northeast Corridor, using highly ruggedized Motorola TLD-1100 radios. he game wasn't worth the candle...

    What should Amtrak change?

Oh, to be sure. I'm serious as a heart attack. Even though I am in the Dallas area, I got the RV package, set it up, and dispatched Frontier (nee' Verizon FiOS) to the scrap track. I did this on the recommendation of a couple of long distance RVers who praise it to the skies.

    What should Amtrak change?

I'll tweet Elon and see if Tesla would be interested in putting Starlinks on the coaches... Instant Internet. I'd pay extra.

Crescent alternative to NOL; roomette questions

I have done similar, but left my car in a lower cost remote parking lot at the airport. Secure and economical, then a quick cab or LYFT to Union Station works well. On the return trip, you can LYFT or taxi directly to the remote lot.

    Amtrak delays

It really was amazing that Southwest allowed this to happen. I've only flown SW maybe 3 times, out of sheer desperation. I refuse to fly them under ordinary circumstances since they dont have assigned seating. Actually, their system collapse affected the other airlines/airports, as the...

    Amtrak delays

Alas, you are right. This is a national shame. However, comma, in case of propulsional or other major failure, I would rather be in my comfy room having a medicinal snort or hot fresh coffee than wondering how much more time I have until I arrive at the smoking hole. I flew every week for over...

    What should Amtrak change?

Or you take your own and save some dough. The convenience of enjoying a snort, a snack or a hot fresh coffee on my schedule far outweighs the slight inconvenience of stocking up and carrying my electric cooler bag. We have to start on The Eagle, so either take your own meals or starve. And quite...

    Round trip to Springfield, Illinois

I have done a couple of "EIther I get an AMTRAK trip or someone is gonna get hurt" day trips DAL-SPI. Very relaxing. Spent the day at the Lincoln Library, couple of used book stores, and a nice lunch. Nice little town. Arrive in the morning, leave in the late afternoon. Nice folks at the depot.

Auto Train Questions (car alarms and other vehicle issues)

I had a Taurus which had an alarm that would arm itself whenever it jolly well felt like it. (There was an issue somewhere, never found it). When I went on the Autotrain, I left a note taped to the dash that if it wouldn't start, to press the unlock button on the fob. Before I got to the...

    Cleaning windows

I once used my Hurry Cane and apparently shamed the SCA into talking someone into using a mop and the potable water hose in St. Louis.

Proposed legislation could affect credit card rewards in the US

Lending institutions are not going to extend credit to those who do not have income or credit history which will qualify them. Lending institutions are for profit industries, not charities. It is unfortunate, but that's life in our political/economic system. Credit, driving licenses, and other...

    What should Amtrak change?

Problem appears not to be ridership, at least in the sleepers. In spite of the exorbitant fares, it is damn near impossibile to find sleeping space unless you are planning months ahead. Understandably, getting a sleeper from Little Rock to Ft. Worth screws up someone wanting a berth from St...

    DAL-CHI Trip Report

Trip went well, the Transfer Chair fits perfectly in the space where the uncomfortable chair is retracted. Best idea I have had in ages. We shared it during the museum trips. Food is still garbage, SCAs mostly inattentive, FSA frazzled trying to run two facilities. The "Snack Bar" was not a...

California Zephyr or Empire Builder next week?

I have been trying to book a bedroom on the Zephyr for a week. The website is almost unusable, pick a date - nope - back up a page - new date - nope - back up a page, rinse and repeat. That is irritating enough, but I can't find availability either way up until September. Same thing on the...

    Amtrak Friendly Travel Agent

Well, I am just about stymied. The AMTRAK web site is just impossible to try to book a multi city or round trip journey. Yes, I am quite painfully familiar with filling out the blocks and waiting for a reply, only to find that the train is booked, or there are no sleepers. Then you have to go...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Well, the boxes are an efficient way of serving this stuff. Boxes are also excellent for taking out the trash. This last weekend, we got the trash delivered on the little black plastic tray. Again, trash is trash no matter the container. And you are right, most of the attendants try to make the...
