    A Modest Proposal

There's no direct train from Philly to Chicago via Pittsburgh, there's no direct train from Florida to Chicago, there's no direct train between Florida and Texas/New Orleans, there's no Amtrak service to Las Vegas, Nashville, Columbus Ohio. I would hardly say "it's not broke".

    What would you add?

Umm, no. That would make the trip from Chicago and points east to LAX a lot longer. I'd cut the Empire Builder west of Minneapolis to restore the Desert Wind and Pioneer (the Pioneer would be the CHI-SEA/PDX train). Los Angeles is more important to me than Seattle or Portland.

No WiFi on Texas Eagle or Sunset Limited?

How about the Capitol Limited? They share the LSL route between CHI and CLE and CLE and PGH at least should be decent service? It should be worthwhile on that route? A lot of the Coast Starlight is through California, service should be available there. They shouldn't need satellite for those...

No WiFi on Texas Eagle or Sunset Limited?

When will Amtrak add wiFi to the Superliners? Is it a feature they have to add to the car itself? And if so, is Amtrak at the stage where they probably won't bother since the Superliners are probably past their shelf life?

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

But there goes the cheap sleeper rooms if they include meals with them again.

Amtrak could add 2nd round-trip train between Harrisburg, Pittsburgh

Hey PA would have two trains along the PGH-HAR route right now if it weren't for Byrd Crap.

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Well the question now is are these "contemporary meals" worth the added expense sleeper passengers pay for them? February 2020, Philly to Orlando, 1 person Cheapest Roomette: Star: $340, Meteor: $415 You're paying $65 for a dinner and a breakfast. I don't think the "Amtrak steak" and omelets...

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Those in coach have to pay extra for these meals in the first place. They're technically not losing anything except the opportunity to purchase "better" meals than the cafe menu (and will probably be overpriced just like those $25 Amtrak steaks).

    A Modest Proposal

If they couldn't run the train to Florida, they should've just canceled the train altogether. What's the point in running it down to Savannah? It's like running the Lake Shore Limited eastbound only to Albany, you've taken away the biggest selling point. Of course to me there's never an...

Amtrak should have an overnight LA-Bay Area train

Doesn't have to be Tehachapi, if Amtrak can run along the Coast Starlight/Pacific Coast route overnight, it works for me. It's ridiculous there's only one train between Los Angeles and the Bay Area (can't even say San Francisco because there are ZERO trains between Los Angeles and San Fran).

    A Modest Proposal

They'll be better off. You own the tracks, you don't have to deal with all the crap from the freights, getting held up or not being able to run trains on ideal schedules. Why do you think Amtrak runs more trains along the NEC than the rest of the country? If Amtrak wants to run more trains, they...

    A Modest Proposal

Why should Florida have to pay for an extension? It's an LD train. It's a worthless train right now unless you live in South Carolina/Georgia. Either extend it to Florida or get rid of it.

    Amtrak Survey

Seems like Anderson has it out for the SWC. I don't know why he has to single it out, it's not like its the only LD train that runs on non PTC compliant lines.
  14. P

    Amtrak Survey

Are you sure it said Las Vegas, NV and not Las Vegas, NM? Why are they saying "East of" Los Angeles Area and not Los Angeles Area unlike they did for Albuquerque, Chicago, and Kansas City? This sounds like a SWC survey.

    Amtrak Corridor Expansion Laundry List

It's easy to blame Ohio but Amtrak has never taken well of Columbus. Amtrak has never had N-S service in its 48 year history and its only E-W service was the National Limited. Gov. Walker of Wisconsin turned down funds as well but he won't touch the Hiawatha service because Amtrak took care of...

Auto Train Coach Food Being Removed 1/14/2020?

As opposed to having to pay for LD trains that don't even go for trains anywhere near where you live as is the case now? What's the difference?
  17. P

    WSJ Video about Amtrak

I certainly agree Amtrak needs both regional and LD trains. But there is only so much equipment, labor, and resources currently available to Amtrak at the moment and only so much money Amtrak can reasonably ask from the federal government. If Amtrak wants to expand some things may have to be...

Senate hearing on "Amtrak: Next Steps for Passenger Rail"

The one argument that could be in favor of passenger miles would seem to be a larger fare (more money). But fares are also dependent on demand and Acela fares are pretty high and I imagine they are higher per mile than LD fares. Also, you have to consider the cost of transporting the passenger...

Senate hearing on "Amtrak: Next Steps for Passenger Rail"

To do that, they'd have to change PRIIA to allow federal funding for corridor service. Maybe that is Anderson's goal. Anderson can always go to the states to start/add additional corridor service or for Indiana to save the Hoosier State, for the most part they're saying no.

    Cardinal pricing and availability oddity

Well if it's based on demand, one way is Newark, NJ and one is Dyer, IN. I'm thinking Newark would have way more demand. Other than people who are trying to game the system, how many people are really going to start a trip out of Dyer as opposed to Chicago? By contrast, you have many more New...
