What to do 8pm-midnight in Pittsburgh?

Bumping this thread as I may do the PHL --> PGH --> CHI --> LAX trip in the near future. Two questions about the current state of this station: 1. If I do decide to wander into Pittsburgh during my layover (I actually love the William Penn Omni mentioned a post above) does this station have a...

    Empire Builder discussion

Huh there is a Stop and Shop a few blocks away but Google maps does not make the area look particularly pedestrian friendly, and an 8 minute walk at night (per Google maps) through unfamiliar territory seems a bit too risky to me (if the train even gets there on time since the Stop and Shop...

    Empire Builder discussion

Taking the Empire Builder for the first time Friday...is there a stop like Albuquerque with the Southwest Chief? Meaning is there a very long stop with a conveniently located grocery store a block from the station where you can run to and pick up snacks and wine? I am guessing Albuquerque is...

Switching from sleeper to coach mid-ride

I put "switching from roomette to coach on the same trip" in the search box and this thread was the top result and it actually answers my question! See, I want to go from LAX to NOL but there are no rooms from LAX to NOL on the Sunset on the day I want to go. There is a room from LAX to SAS on...

Salinas [SNS] is closed on the weekends. No checked baggage.

My experience is the upper bunk on the Superliners only latches at the fully closed or open positions. There is a middle position between fully closed and fully extended but it does not latch there, it just rests there; if you leave it there the bunk bangs up and down over your head every time...

Salinas [SNS] is closed on the weekends. No checked baggage.

I think it's wide enough to sit it there but the bike would be too big to safely latch the top bunk. But like I said I don't think there's much danger in keeping it in the luggage space downstairs.

Salinas [SNS] is closed on the weekends. No checked baggage.

I should add, if anyone stumbles across this thread in a search for Amtrak and folding bikes, that I have successfully stored a folding bike in the top bunk of a Viewliner, but I don't think it will fit in a Superliner top bunk since they fold up at an angle, unlike the Viewliner upper bunk...

Sleeper. Oh it would be fine in the downstairs rack, but carrying the bike around means checking something else, unless I can pack light for the first time in my life.

Salinas [SNS] is closed on the weekends. No checked baggage.

Yeah I need something a little more definite than "maybe I can talk an Amtrak employee into letting me get my expensive folding bike out of the baggage car." (Folding bike in its specialized case, for the record. I thought about "well maybe I can go without checked luggage" but it is so much...

Salinas [SNS] is closed on the weekends. No checked baggage.

Thank you. This is harshing an otherwise issue-free trip I'm planning--PDX to SNS after my conference ends on a Friday, but I will be travelling with checked luggage. What a pain in the tuchus. I'll have to disembark in San Jose (only an hour away) and find a car for the rest of the way. I do...

Salinas [SNS] is closed on the weekends. No checked baggage.

Does this mean: --I will not be allowed to check a bag there if my arrival is a Saturday or Sunday Or: --I will be allowed to check a bag there but I won't be able to access it until they open on Monday Curious if anyone has any experience with this station. It's, ummm, not great for the...

Who is drawn to slow train travel?

"retirees or others with a lot of time to spare" --> Now I don't have a lot of time to spare, but I do work entirely online, which means the slowness of train travel does not mean I am losing work days to my trip. It does mean I am less effective at work than usual due to the annoying gaps in...

Greetings from a new member (with an AT cancellation question)

Isn't it possible to change your trip date to a time far enough in the future that it's within the 100% refund window, and then cancel it for a full refund? Feel like I successfully did this a few months ago while dithering back and forth over a trip. Speaking of dithering over a trip, I have a...

You eat in your room? Why?

I prefer to not have the obligation to interact with strangers while I eat. I want to be able to read a book or just stare out the window. Also there's times I just want to keep working (remote worker, I always work on LD trains) though in practice I may not get a lot done after two Tanquerays...

Denver to Raton ~ Thruway Bus route?

Ah, I am gaming out a trip from LAX to DEN and as usual on this forum people have already addressed the exact question I was interested in! FreeskierInVT, if you run across this thread again--how is the drive from Raton to Denver? Specifically, how extreme are the changes in elevation...I have...

    AmSnag Oddity/Status

Just logged in here to see if this had been noticed yet, and it has. Curious if there is that much of a price difference between days in the COVID era...I just tried a weeks worth of ORL->PHL and PHL->ORL and they were all the same price, both directions.

Trip with multiple legs of travel, paying with points and cash, checked baggage

I just called the Amtrak help line with this question but I'm not completely sure the representative understood what I was asking so I am checking with the forum on this one. Let's say I want to book PHL --> WAS --> LAX, but I don't have enough points to cover the entire trip. (Both of those...

Connecting with the Crescent via the Silver Star (92) in WAS

The ticket agent was able to book me on the 92 to connect with the Crescent, for the record. I'm fairly confident that nearly four hours between arriving and departing trains will allow me to make that connection (knocks on wood.)

Connecting with the Crescent via the Silver Star (92) in WAS

What did you do during that enormous layover? One could definitely make a "day in DC" out of it, hit some museums or something.
